Re: “A sandwich greater than the sum of its parts

Nice reviews and I can attest to the fine authentic weck culinary skills of The Yard of Ale and MacGregors, with a definable preference to the folks in Piffard.

Re: “A sandwich greater than the sum of its parts

Yuck, beef on weck. Attending college in Buffalo, I was introduced to many culinary Buffaloisms that dont fit my palate. While many Buffalonians dont care for garbage plates, Dairy Queen ice cream, putting blue cheese on everything (pizza esp), Mighty Taco, and sponge candy are Buffalo staples. Buffalonians live and breathe those items while Rochesterians dont tend to follow suit.

Re: “The most important meal of the day

Also, don't forget to visit Lettuce B. Frank at the Brighton Farmer's Market on Sunday mornings - great vegetarian options as well as some seriously delicious Irish bacon sandwiches! :)

Re: “The most important meal of the day

Hey everyone....thanks for the comments!

A few responses:

Tom: I definitely enjoy VM's bagel sandwiches with goat cheese but didn't want to make the article too Market heavy. Wouldn't mind doing a market only piece at some point though!

Justin: Good info. For whatever reason I've never stopped into Zimmerman's. Have to put that on my list!

HeyBuddy/Colin: Hard to write an article about I site I hadn't seen before, but I like your site a lot and will be following it in the future. Impossible for me to cover everything in a short article and your site seems to hit a lot of interesting places!

Kate: Union Street makes a solid sandwich as well but it fell into the same area as Scott's so I didn't want to double up on that style.

Re: “The most important meal of the day

This is disappointing on many levels. I thought it was an article about breakfastallthetime.blogspot.com
It is not.
breakfastallthetime.blogspot.com is original.
This article is not.

Re: “The most important meal of the day

HeyBuddy, great blog! And great article, CITY!

HOWEVER, I am a devotee to the Union St Bakery at the Public Market. Best breakfast sandwich. Best no-frills Rochester atmosphere. Best coffee -- dark roast, $1, free refills!

Open every day!

Flour City Bread - don't ask for your egg on bread - you'll have to buy a loaf - and put up with major attitude.

Re: “The most important meal of the day

Zimmerman's Bologna Supreme is a top breakfast sammich. Also, South Wedge Diner's breakfast sandwich with the sausage patty is great as it's seasoned with rosemary.

Re: “The most important meal of the day

Zimmerman's at the Public Market has a sandwich called the "Bologna Supreme", which includes a fried slice of baloney and some meatsauce along with the egg/cheese/bacon. It's very good.

Balsam Bagels also does bagels as breakfast sandwiches, including an option with vegetarian sausage.

Re: “The most important meal of the day

I grew up in Brooklyn with bagel places on several corners. Bagel land's bagels are one of the few bagel that meet the standards of Brooklyn bagels and that says a lot.

Re: “The most important meal of the day

There are a slew of breakfast sandwiches to be had in the area, but I think your discussion of the Public Market offerings should include VM Giordano Imports European Cheese Shop, located a few doors down from Flour City Bread.
They have a few varieties of breakfast sandwiches, and are absolutely delicious.

Re: “The most important meal of the day

YES! You got the best on there. Village Bakery is undoubtedly my favorite breakfast sandwich in Rochester.

Re: “CHOW HOUND: Bar food, turned up to 11

Hi George and Rochester Musician,

Technically, Chow Hound is City's dining (restaurant) news column, and is usually more news style in coverage and focuses on newer businesses in Rochester. George, you bring up an important point - and we are currently looking at how we can better differentiate our reviews from our newsy Chow Hound. In the case of Marshall Street, writer Katie Libby wanted to revisit the restaurant since she recently saw a considerable uptick in talk around the bar's food. But, like I said, we're re-evaluating if Chow Hound was the proper column for that. Thank you for your comments.

Re: “CHOW HOUND: Bar food, turned up to 11

It doesn't, Rochester Musician. And that's my point. This is the Chow Hound column, which is traditionally for dining news, not reviews. That's why it says "restaurant news" at the top of this page.

Re: “CHOW HOUND: Bar food, turned up to 11

George, where does it say that a restaurant or bar must be new in order to be reviewed? And just because you know about the restaurant doesn't mean that there might not be a lot of people who don't.

Don't pass up the pulled pork cuban sandwich!

Re: “CHOW HOUND: Bar food, turned up to 11

"Marshall Street Bar and Grill is not new. "

That's correct. This bar is great and all, but shouldn't the DINING NEWS column try to actually report on something we don't already know about?

Re: “DINING: Free to be gluten-free

Ellie's has the best bread ...they also make hamburger buns that really taste like a hamburger bun....if you are gluten free you will understand!
