Al Gore is a non-scientist multimillionaire who has made tens of millions of dollars investing in green technology. Most of us are just getting by because people like Al Gore have all the money. I want to protect the environment, but buying solar cells and other things with money I don't have doesn't seem like the answer.
The results of Germany's move to renewable sourcing of electricity is much more complex than the author would have one think. Similar for Japan's efforts to shut down nuclear power plants. The cost of generating electricity from renewable sources is considerably higher, and in an effort not to lose jobs due to the move, companies are being exempted from the surcharges, so even more is paid by consumers. Somehow, one does not hear about that. Attached is a link to a NYt article that does a fair job of explaining what is going on.
Our inaction and political paralysis has brought us to the brink of catastrophic climate change. Instead of rebuilding our transit and energy infrastructures we now have a outdated railroad system used increasingly for Bakken oil 'bomb' trains transporting volatile fossil deluent destined for export abroad. Meanwhile Asian and European economies outperform and out-compete us economically and continue to build their new high-speed rail and renewable energy infrastructures. The US has become 'exceptional' only in its spectacular failures.
House calls? Why should social workers be entitled to cars?
I'd be interested to see a comparison of our school tax rates with those of Raleigh... Surely taxes would be significantly reduced if a plan such as this were put in place here, right?
Excellent article on Climate Change and recent local downpours. What is extraordinary about this article is that there isn’t anything remotely like it on any other local Rochester media. And that is even more extraordinary because frequent downpours and other public health issues have all been studied in New York Climate Studies—like this Climate Change factsheet from Cornell http://climatechange.cornell.edu/wp-conten… Or the very comprehensive ‘ClimateAid’ report funded by NYSERDA http://www.nyserda.ny.gov/climaid
We don’t just have to get used to more frequent heavy downpours in our regions, we have to adapt to that, and we have to mitigate (stop) an increase in greenhouse gases, so this doesn’t get even worse.
Sure California would love to have some of our rain right now, but it doesn’t work that way and besides, we cannot handle frequent massive flooding without combine sewer overflows (raw sewage in our drinking water) and road washouts. Climate Change isn’t about fearmogerning; it’s about planning for so folks can be protected and we can build up the funds to handle extreme weather.
That is all going to take serious involvement by our media.

"Urban Presbyterians Together (which advocates regional communitywide solutions to urban problems"
Oh, I recognize this statement. What it means is that they want the people in the suburbs who are mostly conservative, and didn't create these problems to pay for it all. Additionally they don't want conservative ideas to solve their problems. When the left finally decides that they want to solve the region's problems, let us know.
Great article. World's oldest profession is really intertribal warfare and looks like we are all heading for another "Great War" . . . for every Gandhi there are 10 Stalins and Hitlers.
Radical Islamic Jihadis are certainly helping us along this horrible path . . . may the peacemakers unite and eradicate them one glorious day and save the rest of us from Islamist tyranny - the worst tyranny imaginable.
Tom: FYI I was born here and that makes me an American citizen. I did have relatives who came here LEGALLY from other countries (and still have the documents to prove it). I agree we should learn from history. The Native Americans could not turn back the 'immigrants' who eventually colonized and claimed North America. If the US can't or won't defend her borders and sovereignty the same thing could happen again. The US has fought wars to prevent the conquest of other countries but we're not doing anything to protect our own borders. We are a nation of laws and LEGAL immigrants.
I want to be charitable and say thank you to Maggie Brooks. It is one of those "hell freezes over" moments that Brooks and I agree--at least on the surface--on an issue.
Then I think more about motivations or, in this case, lack of motivation. Does the lack of motivation to support casinos have anything to do with the fact that Brooks would not be able to hand out favors/contracts/jobs in a casino project because it would be controlled by the Seneca Nation?
Andrew and many others prove that Christians value money above all else.
And Bart..."we" are legal immigrants? The Native Americans granted us that status?? I think you need to read some history books.
Let's be real honest here. The left has never had much usage for Christianity until now. When the left begins opposing abortion I will believe them.
I ask that if you are Christian to attempt to adopt one of these children and teach them Christian values. Who knows they may vote republican and the whole thing will backfire on obama
This parking lot has been over-packed for many years. When free money is the product; What do you expect? And why are so many poor people entitled to cars?
Let's shut the whole place down. Social workers shouldn't need an office. Clients would be much better served by social workers who exclusively made house calls.
Do you know how to post? Thanks!
Two possible theories: 1. a group of Monroe teachers loudly complained about Ramirez's leadership to the press and to the RTA. Vargas will not cross the RTA. He saw what happened to Brizard. Consequently , Ramirez must go to placate the unhappy teachers and RTA. 2. Ramirez somehow pissed off Vargas. Principal Soler spoke about retaliation against those who do at the Board meeting. Hence, the action taken. To go back to former leadership seems to be a desperate move. It makes no sense and is only a smokescreen for whatever the true motives for the removal of Ramirez in the first place. Why oh why would the Board hire a person at 125k for no available position? This action is incompetence on all parties part. Taxpayers aren't you outraged at this cronyism and mismanagement? How long can this go on unchecked?
"For example, the school's August graduation rate in 2012 was 29.2 percent."
Wasn't Vicky Ramos Monroe's Principal at the time? Can someone explain the logic in going back to that?? Absolutely unbelievable. Plain & simple - Vargas is incompetent and must go.
I read that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel offered to take 1000 of the 'refugees'. Chicago is near the top of the list of cities with crime, gang and gun violence. Isn't that what these children are supposedly fleeing from?
The Rochester City School District is a very good example why you should not consolidate into one large county school system just because of the bloated Central Office and their bungling of anything they touch. Same goes with the school board, who should not be paid anything since they really don't know how to make the right decisions for the students they are supposed to care about. Until we do something about the extreme poverty, this will not have any effect.
If in some way a few dollares could be made on these ones then they would become legal real fast.
Who should be ashamed is Mary Anna Towler for that blatant assault on the city and state she claims to love so much. Mrs. Towler, simply because hard working, LAW-ABIDING citizens are tired of their tax dollars being used for at best, dubious causes and at worst corruption at the highest levels, does NOT mean we are the heartless people you have the insolence to portray us as. Now I just came back from Mass. I prayed that the crisis at the border can get worked out, that these children can find peace and safety. But NOT on our backs and our dollars. I've been made to pay enough over the years for a war I didn't want, for liquor and cigarettes for people who'd rather live on my dollar than make their own, for the rich to make money off the backs of everyone else and for government bureaucrats to sit around watching pornography all day on their computer while getting full health care, paid vacations to luxury resorts and money for pensions.
