Dear Rochester City School District (RCSD) Parents & Rochester Tax Payers,
DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE.
You can be certain that John "Dutch" Summers and Sandra Parker (both wealthy, upper class, suburbanite, politicos) are as concerned about overwhelmingly black and brown, economically poor, RCSD students and families --- as you and I are about the color of the moon. If they want to convince us of their caring and concern for city students and families (from my staunchly-unequivocal view and perspective) --- they can begin by urging their children, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws to move to the city, and enroll their children in RCSD schools. Until then, as far as I'm concerned --- I could care less about how many "successful organizations [they] have built and run." --- As far as I'm concerned --- they have NOTHING to say about the affairs of the RCSD.
A big part of the reason why we have not been able to make significant, fundamental change and improvement within the RCSD is because MANY outsiders think they have a right, and the power to impose upon us agendas that have little to do with the objective best interests and needs of our children, but instead, focus on helping to bolster the bottom-lines of those "successful organizations" that they "have built and run" --- period. Even though their political-agenda-inspired essay contains a few valid points, which really represents old news --- Sandra Parker and so-called "Dutch" Summers do not have the commitment, knowledge, expertise, and /or understanding to contribute anything of value relative to solving complex problems and issues within the RCSD, and I repeat, their only interest lies in bolstering the bottom-lines of their businesses (not based on the RCSD providing well educated, potential employees --- because they will just continue to import them, as they have always done, but instead, based on lucrative contracts for their companies, and/or associates). Like so many others, their real interest is in continuing to pimp our children for resources. Their political-agenda-inspired essay is filled with blatant contradictions, such as the following:
- They claim that they are not writing "as leaders of the organizations [they] lead" --- yet later in the essay they obviously feel that it is important to mention that they " both have built and run successful organizations." Then they go on to explain that their so-called insight is based on the "experience" of building and running successful organizations. So, which is it --- are the writing as "leaders of the organizations [they] lead" or not? Of course they are! So that makes them what?
- If "Superintendent Vargas' ability to execute board policy is being hamstrung" by ASAR or any other RCSD employees --- that's an issue which Vargas should bring to the parents and taxpayers of Rochester, as opposed to taking it to "Dutch" and Sandra. Vargas needs to explain, in clear language, which board policies ASAR is preventing him from executing.
- They wrote about "poor student performance over the past 10 years." Let's try over the last 30 years or longer, which begs the question, i.e. since "Dutch" and Sandra "have lived in this community [their] entire lives, [and supposedly] care deeply" --- where in the heck have they been before now?
- HERE IS THE BIGGEST CONTRADICTION OF ALL: "Vargas has earned the confidence of our community by doing the things a leader should do to improve student achievement." Really??? I have a feeling that "Dutch's and Sandra's" reference in the latter quote relative to the term "our" --- absolutely does not include you and I.
THERE WILL BE NO SIGNIFICANT, WIDESPREAD, FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE AND IMPROVEMENT WITHIN THE RCSD UNTIL AND UNLESS THOSE OF US WHO ARE MOST DIRECTLY, AND MOST NEGATIVELY IMPACTED (AS THEY SAY) --- "TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS," AND BUILD A DEADLY-SERIOUS MOVEMENT --- PERIOD.
Thank you for someone attempting to fight the ignorance and stereotype related to drug addiction. As someone who has fought this battle for years with many years of sobriety, we addicts hate ourselves enough and this awful disease. I did not use to "feel good", I used attempting to feel "normal". As for the rising heroin use, a large part is related to recent government ploys to decrease prescription pill addiction. Rather than go thru a horrendous withdrawal, people have turned to the streets. If the government was so concerned, they would help the millions of addicts begging for an end to their addiction, when the drug Suboxone helps addicts get off opiates without becoming deathly ill, so they may continue to work and not risk losing their job by having to be out sick to withdrawal for 1 -2 weeks, risking their employer find out their shameful secret and lose their job. The government only allows a handful of Dr's to prescribe Suboxone. Primary Dr's are allowed to prescribe drugs getting patients hooked, but not suboxone to get them unhooked. Suboxone is a big money maker. Many have resorted to buying Suboxone on the street to get off heroin, & are arrested for doing so when they are trying to do the right thing.
To the person stating addiction is not a disease because of lack of organ involvement?! I gather you also feel mental illness is not an illness? Why therefore is there such a high genetic disposition for alcoholics? Why is it from day 1, when an alcoholic takes that drink, it initiates a craving for another, & another, whereas a non alcoholic can drink a half of a drink and leave it? You might want to read the AA Big Book.
Supervisor John " Jack" Moore has announced that he will introduce a resolution for the entire Town Board to consider and vote upon at the next Town Board Meeting. The concern is that a casino will be built in Henrietta.
We shall see how the entire Town Board votes on the matter very soon. There are 1100 signatures against the casino proposal and more than likely about the same in favor without submitting any signatures. The rest of Henrietta Residents may be ok with what ever happens in the end. There are about 43,000 residents in the Town of Henrietta.
They put on such a fantastic show at Abilene last night! My ears are still ringing. I agree that they are one of the most righteous live bands ever. EVER!
How many students in the RCSD enter Grade 9 but do not graduate after four years?
How many students that enter Freshman year at MCC do not graduate after two years?
Ginger Beard was and still is the shiznet. Know body can even come close to his artistic ability. Long live the Ginge!!!!!!
Bravo! This is a great start. Kudos to Van White and all who worked so hard at creating this. Pay attention this is how a school board should be run. The days of watching the titanic sink are over. Vargas it's time for you to lead. We are watching and will NOT let something so important as educating our children die. No politics, distracting mind games will be tolerated. Like many parents, I take education seriously. This collaboration gives me hope for positive change. These kids are craving to find even a little scrap of hope. Let's all keep our eyes on the prize. Our children's education will not be played with.
I'm actually hopeful. We are getting closer to the truth. The white elephant is finally being acknowledged. Until the real truth is exposed( thanks to City News- having the guts to shine a light whereas main stream media will NOT) this mess will stay a mess. Thank you city newspaper, Howard Eagle and Van White for not giving up. We all now must put our work in to save our valuable children. We owe them a chance to succeed.
This is the best that these so called business leaders could think of? The school district is in utter chaos and the root cause is principal salaries? Has anyone ever thought of asking educators with no business (ex: charter schools- whose intent is to collect as much money from federal funds- shameless poachers) and dubious politicians ( Vargas right hand gal patty malgieri ) ties for input. We know that Vargas cares little about input from the community. To be fair, the district started to shut down ties between the community when it abruptly ended the parent university program that was directed by the very capable and dynamic Charmaine Cohen-- long before Vargas was chosen as the super. We are obviously entering a very dysfunctional, corrupt era in education. If you really care about the future of our children, pay attention, get angry and BE HEARD!
Sorry, but RIT is in Henrietta, the epitome of car-oriented suburban sprawl. A hopeless situation.
Thank you for pointing out the hypocrisy of these writers. I thought the same thing when I read their piece. I wonder how many Principals they have shadowed? Do they not understand that extending the school days means more duties far beyond the work day. Most Principals already work routinely until 7 or eight or nine pm working 12 hours already.Do they know that teachers expect and get extra pay? The issues of no confidence is far deeper then this single one. Are they deliberately glossing over contradictory directives, poor planning and communication from Central Office? Are they aware that there is a talent drain from the District? At least four Administrators have been denied tenure and gone on to other positions in other Districts to apparent success. High level CO cabinet members are leaving as well. To imply that Principals are somehow not "letting" the Superintendent do his job is just plain wrong , misleading the public , and an insult to the many dedicated administrators in the RCSD
You should make sure the reporting is fair and balanced. Then maybe take a ride up to Niagara Falls NY and you can decide if that's what you want Henrietta to look like. I lived near Niagara Falls for years and post-Seneca development I can tell you nothing has changed. We were promised "more businesses will want to come here, etc" just like Henrietta will be promised, do yourselves a favor and don't fall for it.
The possible casino proposed by the Seneca Indian Nation in Henrietta should be given fair consideration by all concerned. And, I will make sure that happens through fair and balanced discussion in the Henrietta Community.
"But it’s also true that he’s unable to keep many of the social ills that students face every day outside the walls of city schools without more help from the community."
But it's also true that RCSD has MANY agencies & programs from this community willing to help, but Vargas just eliminated their support system within the schools (Student & Family Support Centers). They were created for exactly this purpose. He keeps talking about help from the community but what he's done is make it much harder for this community to help his students. SMH
"The District should develop and lead a multisystem collaborative
using a strength‐based, child‐centered approach that provides
consistent responses in all aspects/settings of the child’s life (school,
home, and community)".
This describes Student & Family Support Centers. But Vargas scuttled those. I'm confused.
Am I the only person in Rochester who knows this movie was written by a writing team that included a native Rochesterian? Chris Roach went to high school with me in Rush-Henrietta, and we discussed this movie AND HIS HAVING WRITTEN IT at our 15th high school reunion in November 2012. Consider yourselves informed!
Well said. The business and college leaders are quick to write essays pointing fingers or suggesting solutions but rarely do they put their own people or resources into the fire. Why doesn't Parker or any of the others get their powerful friends together and put a few millions behind a charter or a particular RCSD school and develop it into the "model" they describe? Beyond this, the superintendent's problems go way beyond the no confidence issue and they know it. Something is up.
RIT actually has a very nice crushed gravel trail that runs from the Canal at UR, follows the transmission lines down across East River and Crittenden Roads and comes out at Jefferson and Brighton-Henrietta Townline Rd. I've ridden it to kickball on Crittenden before, it's quite nice.
It seems to me that the complainants in the original Arizona case were not deprived of anything. They should have simply used the free market to obtain another photographer. Hurt feelings do not trump the freedoms afforded everyone in the exercise of their conscience or religion. Would the writer force
conscientious objectors to carry a weapon or a pro-life doctor or nurse perform an abortion? The first amendment of our Constitution protects all of us, thank God, or Allah , or Vishnu or L Ron Hubbard, or Voltaire or every other Upper West Side humanist!
