Reading “Radio Waves (City, 3/12),” reminded me of how the game of “community radio” is played. As a former call-in show host on a "community" radio station (WITR, 12/91-1/92), I know how it will be played by these new "powers that be (Chuck McCoy, Mike Yates and Dave Sutliff-Atias)."
I was canned after only four shows, because management at WITR did not agree with my views.
Yates claimed that Radio MuCCC will "have a space for relevant and interesting talk, and a place for experimentation --- a place for voices that are underrepresented in the Rochester media."
He then said he will have no place for people who "aren't broadcasting hate speech."
In other words, whatever he may say to the contrary, he won't allow conservative views on his station.
If he does, either he or one of his hosts will control the dialogue so as to make one's opponent look like a fool, or there will be more than one person from the left who will gang up on that person.
McCoy argued "if you don't like someone, you can give your opinion, but no attacks."
Let's see how long it will take for a left-winger to attack a conservative and be chastised for it on McCoy's or Yates’ station.
It will be a longer wait than what would happen if the shoe goes on the other foot.
Effective talk-radio hosts (no names need be mentioned) entertain, inform, educate, promote an emotionally and intellectually honest discussion of the issues and events of the day, and provide a catharsis for listeners and callers.
How many “liberal hosts can do that?
Air America, which was carried years ago on WROC-950 AM, crashed in the ratings, because its hosts talked down to, and insulted audiences with the same bromides that their friends in mainstream media (Gannett, NPR, ABC, NBC, CBS, New York Times, etc.) pushed, despite their claims that their reporters were objective.
More importantly, the views expressed by conservative hosts have validated, and continue to validate, the concerns and fears of their listeners who have been long put off by establishment media organizations.
Complain all you want about signal strength.
Content matters, especially in talk-radio.
Apparently, McCoy, Sutliff-Atias and Yates are really not really interested in facilitating entertaining and informative talk programming, but are more interested in acting as shills for left-wing special interest groups (Hispanics, Blacks, LGBT, etc.) and, maybe, a mayor and a few of her cronies.
They should know enough people in town with like minds and enough money to buy and run a commercial station, on which they could promote their left-wing agenda.
However, they have sided with the government-controlled WXXI-1370 AM, in refusing to compete in the marketplace of ideas.
With that in mind, I would be more than glad to offer my services to managers at any station in town, and show them that the formula I mentioned in this essay can work on the local level.
I doubt there will be any takers.
"And so, it was frankly bullshit when Adore ended up toward the bottom of the heap, but not lipsynching for her life this episode. Nothing about that scenario added up, except for the act that the producers clearly love Adore -- or at least they think that the viewers love her -- and so they want her to stick around for a while. But based on her lack of preparation for the challenge, her lousy job as team leader, and the fact that her runway look was the least polished of the Bottom 3, there’s no reason she shouldn’t have been lipsynching."
I was SO SURPRISED that Adore did not have to lipsynch that I totally blocked out this part of the show! Thank you for confirming this travesty of drag justice.
I so agree with you about Laganja pressuring Vivacious into excusing her for having put the bullseye on her back.
Eric, I am not from Rochester, but I love reading your posts every week. You definitely give the best recap of RPDR that I read online, and I especially love your cleverly placed opinions which are always on point!
I have been watching idol since the start. I must say this is the WORST Idol ever!!!!!!! OMG, it sucks so bad, that I have decided to delete it on my DVR and am switching to The Voice. Randy looks so high, or on mess or something and HCJr. Is funny but is wrong when he says best Singers on Idol.. Has he not seen the ones with with breakout Superstars like Fantasia, Ruben S., Kelly C,, and so on! I think Idol needs to have a better plan, next time around.
Courtney Act was in Australian Idol as Courtney, not as Shane... she didn't come second either! lol
Mimi: That is so sweet of you to say. Thank you for reading!
Danielle: Thank YOU for the correction! I honestly had no idea. I knew Courtney had tried out as a boy, and made it to the finals, but I had no idea about the intervening part. That is so fascinating!
Incorrect info about Courtney! She made it to finals of Australian Idol as Courtney Act!! She auditioned as a boy but got rejected and came back as courtney and they loved her and put her through!!
Just to clarify! :)
just want to let me know that your blog posts give me life!! for the past two seasons , the next day after a new episode airs i excitedly tune in to read your opinion! please dont ever stop!
My thoughts exactly with regard to Alex - that was a top notch performance. Very true that the majority were sadly not up to snuff last night.
Hey Anne! Thank you for the question. The answer: I stopped during the Olympics, because God only sees fit to give me televised ice skating once every four years, and I feel obligated to watch it. But I am planning to check out the finalists tonight and see how they do. If I'm inspired I will likely blog the season. If I'm underwhelmed I might opt out. It sounds weird, but blogging "Idol" is seriously a time commitment...
Inquiring minds want to know - are you going to start covering American Idol again? Or are you done with it?

Really looking forward to it!
And TONIGHT at the MuCCC there's a brief (about a half hour) dramatic reading of the dirtiest Elizabethan poem you could possibly hope to think of, "The Choice of Valentines" by Thomas Nashe.
Pay-what-you-will. 8:00 PM.
I love the first paragraph of this review so much. The comparison to Chekov is spot on. DEAD ON.
