Re: “More Big Five mayors interested in mayoral control

It truly is up to the mayor Howard to make the decision. If she chooses to take over the district as mayor, that choice would be hers and give her the controlling interest. Should the mayor model Buffalo and the other, she would first make that decision and then provide the way to do it in Rochester. Why does Rochester, NY need a state takeover of their school district? They should opt for a City Mayoral takeover and establish a qualified sub section/agency in city government to run it.

Re: “More Big Five mayors interested in mayoral control

Some of you might recall that I complimented City Newspaper reporter, Tim Macaluso for getting it right regarding the potential paper-tiger-subterfuge, which Board of Education Commissioner and president Van White is attempting to run on the community. See the COMMENTS portion of the article at following link:
http://www.rochestercitynewspaper.com/News…

I had also noted in my above referenced COMMENTS, that "at times, I have been among City Newspaper reporter Tim Macaluso's biggest critics." Well, this article represents a classic example of why I frequently criticize Mr. Macaluso's reporting. Sometimes it's difficult to determine if the guy is really paying attention to what's going on around him, or if he is just plain dauncey, or a shrewd and calculating operative who formulates his reports in a manner aimed at soliciting specific types of responses.

For example, why would any education reporter write: "It’s hard to imagine why Warren would leave lawmakers in other parts of the state to decide what’s best for Rochester’s students, or why lawmakers would take action of such magnitude on their own." This guy is kidding, right? I mean, first of all, even though I'm sure they would confer with her, ultimately it's not up to Mayor Warren whether or not "lawmakers in other parts of the state [specifically, in Albany] decide [that] what’s best for Rochester’s students" is for the State to take control. Anyone who has been paying attention knows that there have been ongoing discussions for many months, if not years, regarding the possibility of a State-takeover of public schools in both Rochester and Buffalo, and we know, with regard to governance --- "lawmakers [and policymakers] in other parts of the state [specifically in Albany, i.e., the New York State Board of Regents and New York State Legislature actually have the power to] decide what’s best for Rochester’s students." So, what is this guy talking about? Is his question simply a matter of being uninformed, dauncey, or shrewd and calculating? Does anyone know?

Re: “Parsing O'Brien's recent independent streak

Jim Alesi turned out to be a RINO (Republican In Name Only) who went against his promise to oppose gay marriage and was turned out of office. Ted O'Brien is looking like a DINO (Democrat In Name Only) trying to distance himself from Cuomo as re-election time appeoaches.
O'Brien announced he's against Gov. Cuomo's plan to give free college degrees to prisoners, then votes against the so-called Dream Act to give college tuition to illegal immigrants! He stated in both cases that he was acting according to the wishes of his constituents who have expressed their opinions on the subjects. I wonder what they've done with the REAL Ted O'Brien, the one who voted for Cuomo's NY SAFE gun control act WITHOUT any debate or input. Oh, right... that was the Ted O'Brien who wasn't yet running for re-election. Now Mr. O'Brien has to give the appearance of listening to his constituents and hope they'll forget long enough to re-elect him so he can go back to Albany and ignore them until the next election.

Re: “[UPDATED] $12.4 million is nice, but...

"More money for Rochester, of course, would probably also mean less money for somebody else. "

Very true statement. Let's just look at the "Buffalo Billion" for instance, where NYS taxpayers are GIVING a billion dollars to the Buffalo area. Rochester is about 5% of the population of NYS, so we in Rochester are forced to give Buffalo $50,000,000. How is that fair? Add the $125,000,000 for their football stadium and hundreds of millions for other projects and ...wow. We being screwed in Rochester.

Re: “[UPDATED] $12.4 million is nice, but...

Just proves that Morelle and Duffy don't actually have any power in Albany. Maybe Louise should quit wasting her time on high-speed rail (which will, and should, never happen here) and focus on this. These people are a joke.

Re: “Could Trump split ranks of the local GOP?

Trump has played his supporters once again. He will never run for public office. He has to be anointed to accept any office because he does not have the personality or brains to go through a real election. He could not take the rejection of a loss. I wonder if the politicians who he lead on feel foolish now? How many times will people fall for his nonsense?

Re: “Could Trump split ranks of the local GOP?

Trump will do anything for free publicity. I wonder, do all those politicians that he flirted with feel foolish now? He will not stop advertising himself and he will never run for public office. He does not have the personality or the smarts to survive public scrutiny. He also will not risk the public humiliation of losing. Oh, and the millions he makes on that boring tv show which is the only money he makes. Everything else is mortgaged to the hilt. Wasn't it BT Barnum who warned us that one was born every minute? Trump followers prove that rule!

No surprise, he's not running. He "has much bigger plans." He has never run for public office, just teased. What a creep anyway.

Re: “Could Trump split ranks of the local GOP?

I actually think he could run this time. But only if unopposed in the Republican party like he says it would have to be.

I predict that the Republicans will remain divided right up to the finale of The Apprentice.

Re: “Could Trump split ranks of the local GOP?

The "Donald" loves the free attention. He will not run , nor spend any of his money on such a losing venture. The local politicians look silly running after him. When will they learn Trump is only in this for himself. His super sized ego makes Cuomo look normal!

Re: “[UPDATED] Funke announces Senate run

I wonder if Ted O'Brien is proud of being parts of Cuomo's NYSAFE act charade and the way it was rammed through begind closed doors in the dead of night and without any public debate or input. He states he "fought to clean up Albany". What exactly has been accomplished to combat corruption in New York? Later, Ted.

Re: “[UPDATED] Funke announces Senate run

And the race begins! While O'Brien has a Democratic enrollment advantage, Funke is well-known from his decades on 10NBC (I watched him for years until his retirement) and seems to be peddling the "reasonable conservative" message. Can he do what Maggie did and make the leap from local celebrity to politician? This will be an interesting race.

Re: “Superintendent Vargas needs union help, and more

Dear Rochester City School District (RCSD) Parents & Rochester Tax Payers,

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE.

You can be certain that John "Dutch" Summers and Sandra Parker (both wealthy, upper class, suburbanite, politicos) are as concerned about overwhelmingly black and brown, economically poor, RCSD students and families --- as you and I are about the color of the moon. If they want to convince us of their caring and concern for city students and families (from my staunchly-unequivocal view and perspective) --- they can begin by urging their children, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws to move to the city, and enroll their children in RCSD schools. Until then, as far as I'm concerned --- I could care less about how many "successful organizations [they] have built and run." --- As far as I'm concerned --- they have NOTHING to say about the affairs of the RCSD.

A big part of the reason why we have not been able to make significant, fundamental change and improvement within the RCSD is because MANY outsiders think they have a right, and the power to impose upon us agendas that have little to do with the objective best interests and needs of our children, but instead, focus on helping to bolster the bottom-lines of those "successful organizations" that they "have built and run" --- period. Even though their political-agenda-inspired essay contains a few valid points, which really represents old news --- Sandra Parker and so-called "Dutch" Summers do not have the commitment, knowledge, expertise, and /or understanding to contribute anything of value relative to solving complex problems and issues within the RCSD, and I repeat, their only interest lies in bolstering the bottom-lines of their businesses (not based on the RCSD providing well educated, potential employees --- because they will just continue to import them, as they have always done, but instead, based on lucrative contracts for their companies, and/or associates). Like so many others, their real interest is in continuing to pimp our children for resources. Their political-agenda-inspired essay is filled with blatant contradictions, such as the following:

- They claim that they are not writing "as leaders of the organizations [they] lead" --- yet later in the essay they obviously feel that it is important to mention that they " both have built and run successful organizations." Then they go on to explain that their so-called insight is based on the "experience" of building and running successful organizations. So, which is it --- are the writing as "leaders of the organizations [they] lead" or not? Of course they are! So that makes them what?

- If "Superintendent Vargas' ability to execute board policy is being hamstrung" by ASAR or any other RCSD employees --- that's an issue which Vargas should bring to the parents and taxpayers of Rochester, as opposed to taking it to "Dutch" and Sandra. Vargas needs to explain, in clear language, which board policies ASAR is preventing him from executing.

- They wrote about "poor student performance over the past 10 years." Let's try over the last 30 years or longer, which begs the question, i.e. since "Dutch" and Sandra "have lived in this community [their] entire lives, [and supposedly] care deeply" --- where in the heck have they been before now?

- HERE IS THE BIGGEST CONTRADICTION OF ALL: "Vargas has earned the confidence of our community by doing the things a leader should do to improve student achievement." Really??? I have a feeling that "Dutch's and Sandra's" reference in the latter quote relative to the term "our" --- absolutely does not include you and I.

THERE WILL BE NO SIGNIFICANT, WIDESPREAD, FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE AND IMPROVEMENT WITHIN THE RCSD UNTIL AND UNLESS THOSE OF US WHO ARE MOST DIRECTLY, AND MOST NEGATIVELY IMPACTED (AS THEY SAY) --- "TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS," AND BUILD A DEADLY-SERIOUS MOVEMENT --- PERIOD.

Re: “Recommendations for improving city schools: What now?

I'm actually hopeful. We are getting closer to the truth. The white elephant is finally being acknowledged. Until the real truth is exposed( thanks to City News- having the guts to shine a light whereas main stream media will NOT) this mess will stay a mess. Thank you city newspaper, Howard Eagle and Van White for not giving up. We all now must put our work in to save our valuable children. We owe them a chance to succeed.
