Re: “Good souls: Cemetery care often falls to volunteers

Good reporting. I agree with Kwai's comment - this is something worth checking out and perhaps getting involved with.

Re: “Young adults love cities? Will Rochester benefit?

Whether or not this is benefitting Rochester, there really is no question. Many of the residents in the lofts downtown and in High Falls are young professionals. YP housing is what Midtown and Sibley are currently being repurposed for. YPs and empty nesters are basically the main thing that Rochester has positioned itself to attract, and these segments are where a lot of Rochester's recent success have come from.

Many younger people come to Rochester as college students and reside initially in the Southeast neighborhoods or perhaps around PLEX. The well-established rental markets and commercial corridors (e.g. Monroe Avenue) make these areas magnets for college-age people on a budget. These people are having positive experiences with the city and are often staying in place or exploring slightly upmarket options nearby while they start off careers.

Re: “Close race with Slaughter introduces Mark Assini to the nation

Not Lovely Warren, but Bob Duffy. I think Duffy has positioned himself to run for the 25th ever since he stepped away from Andrew Cuomo. I expect that Louise Slaugher will retire in 2016 and that Duffy will replace her.

Re: “The D&C's new newsroom

OK, lets think people!

To constituonal originalist: Thanks to god that our constituional originalists (those that actually wrote the constitution) were actually smart and forward thinking vs. those that claim to defend the constituon now. If yo don't like the current administation, you are free to focus on thier stances, accomplishements, or lack of accomplishments. I woudl like your boss to go back ane review your high school trnascripts and/or SAT scores and decide if you should remian employed.

Muzenews: Yes, it is sad what happens when old, comfortable insititutions wither and fall by the wayside. However, what is Gannet to do? Paper news is failing and hemmoraghing money. They have been passed by like pony express and rotary phones. everyone reading this (including you) are partially to blame. Would you prefer to give up your tablet or smart phone used to read this story and share this opinion? Should we ban the internet to save printed news? Dinosaur businesses waiting to long to react to technology disruption will fail (i.e. see Kodak as another example). Yes, it is a shame that good, talented people pay the price for this but anyone who has not seen this coming for at least the last decade has either in denial or not paying attention.

Re: “WEDNESDAY EVENING UPDATE: Slaughter holding on to slight lead

Having Louise Slaughter as our representative is one of the many things that make me proud of Rochester. I am so grateful that she is willing to continue serving us during this difficult time.

Re: “Election results: Slaughter's squeaker, Cuomo wins, Funke unseats O'Brien

Kristen... what happened at Kodak was purely and clearly mis-management by a number of Kodak Board Members over at least 15 years...it has nothing to do with whom is elected or whom is not elected. Kodak was arrogant and "screwed" about 80,000 workers of various levels in Monroe County. But Kodak is gone now...so what do we do ? What big, manufacturing company is it that will come to Monroe County to set up shop ... none because it is too expensive to operate and make a free market profit without abusing the environment...none !!! Why because it is too expensive in our region. Cuomo is trying to make things "right" but it takes time. I am glad you moved to NC just like many others because it is cheaper to live and people do not have to give so much of their hard earned money to state, county and local Govt' services.

Re: “Close race with Slaughter introduces Mark Assini to the nation

The local Republican Committee ( Monroe County ) put all of its time, effort and money into Rich Funke because they knew he could beat O Brien. No one ever thought that Slaughter could be beaten... and she has been beaten in Monroe County by about 93,000 voters. Even if Assini loses after the ballot count...we have sent a clear message to Louise...get off your butt and get this economy going again if you can; make a few changes in the ACA Act to make it even better; get funds to fix our infrastructure; rail is good but fix the freakin' bridges first; work with the entire congressional and executive bodies to get it done and stop bickering; lessen the size of Govt' and make your people work harder with less like the rest of us.

Re: “Election results: Slaughter's squeaker, Cuomo wins, Funke unseats O'Brien

To crm135790 some people do abuse the welfare policy..just having lots of babies or doing drugs and being lazy sitting at home..i am NOT saying being a mom is not a full time cause it is..and yes everyone needs help once in awhile but PLEASE dont abuse the system or help..what happened to Kodak being the place to work when they employed over 60,000 people??..i used to work there but 9yrs ago i took the voluntary buy out at 30 yrs old and moved to NC..kodak would rather sell the jobs over seas to pay cheaper wages then care and worry about the people of rochester ny..the ONE thing we agree on is upstate ny is a great place to live..excellent colleges..snow...snow..and cold..im glad i got out when i did..NC is a GREAT place to live..cheaper taxes..jobs..growth.weather is great and gas is only 2.85..

Re: “Close race with Slaughter introduces Mark Assini to the nation

I hope Warren runs for Congress, she will get less than 20 percent of the vote. Her brief record shows she has no clue what she's doing and is under educated and overwhelmed as a Mayor. She doesn't even seem to have a grasp of her own appointees, just look at the mess she's made at the Housing Authority. I would love to see her actually debate someone. We know why she's Mayor, the girl from the neighborhood had the connects with Gant. They got 4,000 people to magically show up and vote for a primary, boom she's Mayor. At her present rate, she'll be lucky to get re-elected. The Rebulican could run my uncle Joe against her and win. And lets write off the irish vote right now.

Re: “WEDNESDAY EVENING UPDATE: Slaughter holding on to slight lead

Keep rootin' tootin' Katie...but it is what it is !!! And, it is not shallow to me...only to you. We shall see in about 6-7 days. Louis is also unobtainable and not very easy to get in touch with as I know from personal experience. 85 years old of age is too old to serve properly.Louise had her chances over 15 terms. Now it is time for change...I can see you do not like change but change is coming. Also, I hold close the values of both parties and vote on the candidate and their ideas for change...not the same old, same old things... that Louise has championed over the years. And. loosing a spouse has a great , far reaching impact on any person's ability to serve you , me and the rest of the district. Have you lost a loved one ? I have lost a few and it hurts for a long , long time. Time to accept defeat and retirement... move on down the road. Make way for a better Upstate, NY Congressional District.

Re: “WEDNESDAY EVENING UPDATE: Slaughter holding on to slight lead

I support Louise Slaughter and her age has nothing to do with the fact nor losing her husband has anything to do with her ability and experience to serve. I don't care that she has been 15 terms in service and in fact I like that she has that much experience. You vote for reasons that are shallow and I will tell you this I had Louise personally call my home and talk to me when I had a problem and she did everything to help. Louise was not always a big Politician as you say and I still remember her at Wegman's and the public market talking to people. She worked her way up to a higher position though her experience. I don't need a Republican Assini to be my Congressman. I want Louise Slaughter for as long as she can be a Congresswoman. She is a wonderful woman who acts and helps and full of compassion. I know because I had the pleasure of meeting her. I hope Louise Slaughter pulls this off. The whole Country is not happy and that is why GOP won so many Blue states. I'm rooting for Louise Slaughter.

Re: “WEDNESDAY EVENING UPDATE: Slaughter holding on to slight lead

Louise should wait another several days before declaring victory...she has had enough time and effort in Congress ( 15 terms ). It is time for new ideas and to give someone else a chance to do some good. At 85 years old and just loosing her husband it is time to step aside. I will say it because Assini was smart enough not to make it an issue. But it is the reason I voted for Assini just as many other conservative democrats and moderate republicans did yesterday. I also voted for him because he is the only candidate that did not "sling mud" but did present some facts that were somewhat important to voters. I met Mark at a Committee Meeting in Henrietta, NY. Mark is asking for the Casino in Gates as Town Supervisor... but will he get the support from fellow board members ? I would rather have seen or met another candidate but he was the only other choice. And, 93,000 other voters felt the same way in his district. I also tried to meet with Louise and her Chief of Staff this summer and she did not have time for me on an important issue facing Rochester concerning safety for our young people. Bob Duffy was going to attend but no one else from the City or County would attend. What does that tell me about politics... I give everything and should not expect anything in return.

Re: “Election results: Slaughter's squeaker, Cuomo wins, Funke unseats O'Brien

Voting against Louise Slaughter was incredibly, incredibly stupid. She was the main person in Congress fighting against industry farm policies that are making antibiotics obsolete. Do you want to go to the doctor with your child who has an infected finger and be told there's nothing that can be done about it and your child will die? That is what will happen if we don't get a control on misuse of antibiotics.

"people who shout loudest about the constitution turn a blind eye toward GOP voter suppression"

You cannot support that assertion with evidence.

Yet voter fraud is well known and documented.

I will present my evidence when I see yours.

Re: “Election results: Slaughter's squeaker, Cuomo wins, Funke unseats O'Brien

To Mr "IN"...welfare is a Federal Program that is set by the Fed...to the State of NY and then unfunded mandates are handed on down to the County Of Monroe. I do not think that anyone wants to be on public assistance but sometimes there is no other alternative or choice. It is a helping hand on a temporary basis only. We need good schools to properly educate our young people to take care of you and me in our later years. Although it has not worked to well in the RCSD for the last thirty years the County of Monroe and its suburban schools train and educate our young people very well indeed. But I may add that our schools could tighten their belts more and make thing work without too high of school tax rate. However, they ( new graduates ) leave the state because there are no good jobs. Only top level positions and bottom of the barrel min. wage jobs. Our 1966 wages at min. wage then are now equal to $11.25 per hour in today's dollars. That is the problem; and, there is more too... guns, violence, no concern for the other guy, and no way out in the "two cities" of Rochester. So then we talk of $1 million on police body cameras instead of creating jobs when all a young men have to do is follow police officers' orders and sort it out later in court with an attorney. And, it has nothing to do with being Republican or Democrat my friend...it is greed and selfishness that rule the year 2014. You may want to consider moving to Arizona or Texas if you really feel the way you do... with the "good old boys" eeeeeehhhhhahaaaaaaaawwwwwww. New York Upstate is a great place to live with many goods things to offer except fair paying jobs. If you correct the unemployment then many other things will change for the good. So...please keep working; get involved in your local politics; and, get your self elected and try to make changes or move away.

A constitutional originalist / anonymous cut-paste-tea-partier has a point about money in politics, but I find it ironic that the people who shout loudest about the constitution turn a blind eye toward GOP voter suppression in the name of stopping non-existent "voter fraud". - Matt (actual name)

I, for one, can guarantee you with certainty, that if you locate and print the presidents college transcripts, or Lois Lerners emails, your circulation would skyrocket, and therefore your jobs would remain intact.

Have a go at it, would you please?
