Hi George and Rochester Musician,
Technically, Chow Hound is City's dining (restaurant) news column, and is usually more news style in coverage and focuses on newer businesses in Rochester. George, you bring up an important point - and we are currently looking at how we can better differentiate our reviews from our newsy Chow Hound. In the case of Marshall Street, writer Katie Libby wanted to revisit the restaurant since she recently saw a considerable uptick in talk around the bar's food. But, like I said, we're re-evaluating if Chow Hound was the proper column for that. Thank you for your comments.
It doesn't, Rochester Musician. And that's my point. This is the Chow Hound column, which is traditionally for dining news, not reviews. That's why it says "restaurant news" at the top of this page.
George, where does it say that a restaurant or bar must be new in order to be reviewed? And just because you know about the restaurant doesn't mean that there might not be a lot of people who don't.
Don't pass up the pulled pork cuban sandwich!
"Marshall Street Bar and Grill is not new. "
That's correct. This bar is great and all, but shouldn't the DINING NEWS column try to actually report on something we don't already know about?
Ellie's has the best bread ...they also make hamburger buns that really taste like a hamburger bun....if you are gluten free you will understand!
It's always a treat to see the linguistics sins of City paper (see anything written by Frank). Is it too much to ask for editorial standards? True, this is Rochester--and your readers, well, not the most sophisticated. So, "panini" is plural "panino" is singular. What next, ordering one biscotti?
Delicious vegan food is one reason why the number of vegans has doubled in less than 3 years. Here's a video to help everyone understand why so many people are making this life affirming choice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKr4HZ7ukSE

Jane, if you click on the "contact us" link on the bottom of the webpage, it gives the address of the CITY newspaper....which clearly shows what state this is in. Rochester residents would typically be familiar with street names and google maps is helpful for those who aren't :)
Gluten free beer/cider?
Found it. Its called Angry Orchard. Happy when I saw it at Brighton X-Press at 1738 Monroe Avenue. Hope this helps a few of us.
We ate here a couple nights ago based on this review. Just have to tell you the review is very understated. Good beer, really nice people and easily the best burger you will ever eat (Angry Goat Burger). And best of all the chef shared with us their unique appetizer, Chocolate-Covered Bacon! What's not to love!
Rochester Pizzaguy - I do have a number of friends that have chosen to cut/reduce gluten from their diet just because it makes them feel better. I wanted to include everyone that both followed a gluten-free lifestyle out of necessity and those that just do it because they feel it's a healthier decision to make for themselves.
Hi Jason! Please note the disclaimer above "The bakeries and restaurants featured here are in no way meant to encompass the only establishments to enjoy gluten-free food in Rochester."
Curious: why not mention the rest of 2013's "Best Gluten-Free Options"? Owl House (the winner) and Natural Oasis?
"[A]n increasing amount of people are choosing a gluten-free lifestyle for healthier eating."
It seems worth mentioning that unless you have a specific health issue involving gluten (and certainly some people do), there is nothing "healthier" about going gluten-free. It's just the dietary fad du jour. If you suspect that you make have a gluten-related problem, I'd suggest visiting your physician for a diagnosis. Otherwise, don't fall for the hype.
Jane: there's something called google maps. Welcome to the future.
Hi Jane, we're the local alt-weekly newspaper in Rochester, NEW YORK. All restaurants listed are local to our city and surrounding suburbs.
Isn't the Internet mist useful as a source of INFORMATION?? :((
Which city of Rochester are you??? You don't give addresses of restaurants!!!
Great article Dayna!
