Re: “Report says red-light cameras effective at reducing accidents, violations

According to my calculations, the red light cameras are having a 5% positive safety impact. I didn't like that this report came out a few days before city council voted. The State Legislature similarly stifled any debate.

Re: “The Pied Piper of Psaegz

Best gigs of all time... when Seth/Quankmeyer/Dufus & co were doing the weekly Funderwhere shows every Saturday at midnight at Surf Reality in NYC... anybody who was at any of those will attest it was consistently mind-blowing! People looking for an intro should check out the albums "1:3:1" and "Last Classed Blast".

Re: “Stealing Susan B.?

Whether or not Susan B. Anthony was for or opposed to abortion, the medical knowledge that was available to people then are very different from knowledge that we have now.

When we study history, we can't lose site of context.

We don't know what Lincoln, Douglass, or Anthony would do or what social stance they would take now with their "turn of the century" mindset.

Because they are dead.

Everything you do after the fact is pure speculation and that is why the House is different from the List. Why make definitive statements for the dead? Why stand behind the symbol of someone else and use their corpse as a puppet?

That's what religious zealots do with saviors.

I don't proclaim to know what Susan B. Anthony thought about abortion. She never made a definitive statement and that's why there's this discussion about it now.

Re: “Stealing Susan B.?

The policy of Susan B Anthony’s newspaper did only 2 things: Opposed standing armies and opposed ads for abortion.

Editors of her newspaper called abortion ‘feticide’, and ‘child-murder’ and ‘a crime against humanity’.

"The Revolution", Susan B Anthony's newspaper, reiterated and explained the no-abortion policy multiple times.

Re: “City schools' suspensions challenged

I see a lot of posturing and "root" socio - economic quotes but what about step one , two, three etc.

Please...gottasayit has a solid idea and I have one too. Please make believe that I know nothing and present a step by step plan to turn it around. I feel all of your pain but the RCSD ADMIN and the Board have not and will not ( maybe ) turn it around so it is up to us. Please keep the step by step ideas coming. Please post them here so we can fix it or our city and county will be doomed in another 10 years.

Re: “Stealing Susan B.?

Susan B. Anthony was a passionate advocate for a better society through supporting women's independence - their rights to education, employment, etc. The context of her 1875 speech on "Social Purity" [which sounds like she is on stage in an auditorium, not writing legislation], she says this: "Marriage never will cease to be a wholly unequal partnership until the law recognizes the equal ownership in the joint earnings and possessions. The true relation of the sexes never can be attained until woman is free and equal with man. Neither in the making nor executing of the laws regulating these relations has woman’s had the slightest voice. The statutes for marriage and divorce, for adultery, breach of promise, seduction, rape, bigamy, abortion, infanticide—all were made by men. They, alone, decide who are guilty of violating these laws and what shall be their punishment, with judge, jury and advocate all men, with no woman’s voice heard in our courts, save as accused or witness, and in many cases the married woman is denied the poor privilege of testifying as to her own guilt or innocence of the crime charged against her." It reads to me that she would like women to get involved and write the law around abortion [these laws] "were all made by men." To distort this to serve another purpose is quite sad and really wrong. Let's let Ms. Anthony speak for herself: http://www.pbs.org/stantonanthony/resource…

Re: “Bill Cosby, under fire, is scheduled for April show in Rochester

I am offended by the old allegations of sexual abuse of multiple women by BILL CLINTON. He was never charged or convicted of any of those, although they got him for lying in the Lewinsky affair and was impeached for it. I can't stand seeing and hearing Bill Clinton in interviews and on the campaign trail. Why does the media treat Clinton differently than Bill Cosby?

Re: “City schools' suspensions challenged

The single biggest factor in the success of any school is its culture. Research strongly supports this and no one would disagree. The suspension study alone is fine but it will no doubt be followed by central office action and this will make things worse-not better. The D and C is already advocating for more alternative to suspension rooms not knowing that ATS and others programs don't work. I would challenge anyone that doubts me to go into a few of these rooms unannounced. Just do it. When will we stop trying to mandate fixes that rely on human emotions?

You can't mandate compassion or empathy or other emotions. We must fix the heart of the problem, the school culture. We must change the culture at its core and not get distracted by changing policies or procedures. Schools are about people and emotion first. Everyone has forgotten this. Here is your solution....Give the schools back to those who are in them. Pride and ownership drive caring and responsibility. Maslow was right. Environments that are family-like are more conducive to learning. These cultures will only happen if schools like the Pilot Schools in Boston are created. Just google Pilot Schools in Boston and be ready to cry about how far behind we are. The fixes must start in the classrooms, not the offices. The board, union leaders and the superintendent must trust that there are teachers, parents and principals who are more capable than they are.
