Re: “DINING REVIEW: Sultan Lebanese Cuisine & Bakery

Thanks for the comment PixelHustler and, speaking only for my own review style, I make it a point to be as objective as possible and provide a balanced look at a restaurant without glossing over the negatives. I'm glad that came through in this piece!

Re: “DINING REVIEW: Dogtown

It should be mentioned that Dogtown is the only place in the city that I've found to serve a vegan garbage plate! A neat meatless take on the original, it leaves you wanting a bit for grease, but it's a great alternative.

Re: “DINING REVIEW: Sultan Lebanese Cuisine & Bakery

I don't know if there was an editorial change, or if it's just a function of me having read a larger number of City's reviews, but things seem much more honest and less "always glowing no matter what" lately. I dig that. Reading restaurant reviews that actually mention the ups and downs of a place are much more useful.

Re: “DINING REVIEW: The Red Fern

@RocCityFoodLame - Being the same as the meat version is not what Red Fern is going for. It is an alternative for those who choose not the eat the cruelty and heart disease promoting original.

Re: “DINING REVIEW: The Red Fern

As usual, it is always depressing to read the restaurant review. It's usually completely off the mark of the dour, behind-the-times "restaurant" scene that is provincial Rochester.

The vegan hot sauce mentioned by the "reviewer," as all people in Rochester when comes to anything, are clueless. The hot sauce that is indigenous to Rochester does not contain any tomato or tomato sauce whatsoever. In fact, it is or should be suet based. Therefore, this vegan crap, is not the Rochester sauce they are attempting to pass off to it's gullible gluten free, lactose free Rochester. It's hip to be gluten/lactose free, especially in Rochester. Next year, some study will show Twinkies are good for you. Someone in Rochester will open a Twinkie-based shop.

Re: “Open Face Sandwich Eatery

After 10 fantastic years in the South Wedge we've decided to entertain the idea of passing the torch. Open Face is open and has no intentions of closing its doors! We could never deny you Mashed Pea and Moxie! Thank you City Newspaper for the wonderful words and recognizing our hard work. We've got a lot of fun, new things in the works. Here's to many more years of amazing sandwiches! - Open Face

Re: “Dining Review: Mac's Philly Steaks

Thanks for the Wimpys Burger tip!

Hi J -- there had been a location in East Rochester, but now Mac's is in Fairport (and Canandaigua).

Re: “DINING REVIEW: Osteria Rocco

Since first eating at Rocco shortly after the restaurant opened, we've returned time-after-time, never leaving disappointed and, nearly always, glad to have visited and eager to return. The exceptions have been when there have been too many guests or some are overly exuberant, perhaps because of the fare. Or, maybe it was Sly's libations.

Re: “Dishing it out

Yeah, Rosie's might have had more success if their actual hours of business ever resembled what they posted.

Re: “Dishing it out

I will miss Rumi's. It had the best salmon kebob I've ever tasted and it was a cozy little place. Great turkish coffee too. Alas. Rumi's, I hardly got to know you!

Re: “Dishing it out

Sorry to hear that Rosie's Hot Buns closed. I tried to go there a few times but they were never open during the posted hours when I went.

Re: “DINING REVIEW: Fraiche Bistro and Dessert Bar

My wife and I enjoyed every bit of our meal here, including dessert. The prices might scare the young crowd around the East End, but this is sophisticated cuisine with complex flavors. Don't wait, this is the real deal.

Amazing food, great drinks with a warm cozy ambience! Raphael chats with his customers like guests in his home. Wonderful service, a true tribute to his mother that has el Rincon in Sodus!
