Re: “[UPDATED] Democrats endorse Tom Richards

MJN, I should've been clearer. What I meant is that Richards is clearly the choice of the party machine, and the narrative Warren's campaign is using is that of someone who will represent people who feel disenfranchised: like they don't have a voice in city government.

    Re: “Improving neighborhoods

    Hello again, Rochester Musician,

I should have been clearer: of course I know that geographically, Beechwood is in the northeast. But for purposes of the FIS program, it's part of Southeast Council member Elaine Spaull's district.

    Thanks!

    Rochester Musician,
I double checked with the city administration and they do indeed consider Beechwood the southeast.

    Thanks!

Re: “Few layoffs in RCSD budget for next year

Mike, you bring up an important and timely point. Our reporter received the press release from the school district on Sunday night, containing the information in the above blog post. Now, do we post that, knowing full well it's incomplete and also knowing that we'll do a much more substantial story soon after? Or do we sit on it, knowing that all the other local media have also received it and are likely to go with it immediately? That conversation is one we have almost daily in our newsroom. Thanks for your feedback. Chris Fien, City news editor

Donald, if you could get Mr. Maye to return my calls, I'd love to speak with him about this and other matters regarding the church.

    Re: “RPO terminates Remmereit

Nelson, my understanding is that some people did write-in alternate candidates. I don't know what the board did with those votes, however. All they did at the meeting was announce the winners, which were the eight board-backed candidates.

    Re: “Runaway train station?

    Mike,
I just heard from Gary Walker. Here's his response:

Chris, technically your reader is correct. The money does come from a federal Tiger Grant, however, the grant comes to us via New York State. So in this case, it is a federal Tiger Grant to the state that we support. So NYSDOT does indeed control the dollars along with the matching $7 million. The work we did was to get the ball rolling, and it is indeed rolling now. Our concerns about preserving some of that work and the citizen input has already been documented by your fine publication.

    • ELECTIONS 2012: The case against Brooks for Congress

Congressional candidate Maggie Brooks almost never refers to the “people” of Monroe County; they are “taxpayers,” even when the context seems to demand another noun. The subtle bit of messaging aligns with Brooks’ signature and much-touted accomplishment as county executive: freezing the property tax rate.
