I know how you feel. Last year the D&C ran an article about a local homeowner who lived in a," cottage-style home with shutters and a water break wall painted shamrock green. At water’s edge is a three-foot-tall hand-painted carved wood leprechaun with red hair holding two wrenches and a can of Guinness beer. No doubt a proud Irish family lives in this home..."
I contacted the reporter and editor on the story to point out that, as an Irish-American, I could tell them that shamrock green paint slapped everywhere and a three foot leprechaun holding a can of beer is tasteless and embarrassing schlock, not the sign of a "proud Irish family". I further commented that while the paper had previously and vociferously opposed those who perpetuated stereotypes against blacks or women or Hispanics, on St. Patrick's Day it was apparently just good, clean fun to run a story featuring demeaning and stereotypical images of those from Ireland.
Needless to say I didn’t receive a response.
Troll Whisperer - j.a.m.'s headline is found in the same newspaper that carries stories about Newtown being a government plot, and stories about Obama turning the US over to the UN, and of his being a Muslim, a communist, a fascist and being born in Kenya.
Why do we have to waste tax dollars on special warning signs at interesections with red light cameras? Stopping is required by law at ALL red lights and at all STOP signs. Those too ignorant or too arrogant to stop don't deserve a second warning sign, they deserve a fat fine !
One name is striking in it's absence from this article...Robert Duffy,
Weren't we told by the local media that Duffy would be a powerful friend at court?
Weren't we told that Andrew's selection of him to be Jr. Ass't Gov. was a clear indication of the new importance that the new governor was placing on Upstate?
Weren't we told that the with Duffy in Albany the fiscal flood gates would open and Rochester would be inundated in a wave of pork?
Could it be that the media was mistaken? A mistake which the wall of silence surrounding Duffy now makes clear?
Could it be that picking Duffy was merely a cynical gesture to temporarily placate upstaters and to throw a sop to the GOP by putting a life-long Republican (and unconvincing convert to the Democratic Party) near the seat of power?
Could be be after all that those of us who joked that Duffy's job would be to pick up Andrew's dry cleaning and schlep his coffee were closer to the truth then we imagined?
Interesting. When City reports that Richards will run for re-election his platform is presented in a sedate and professonal manner ...
"Richards said there is still much he wants to continue to work on, including strengthening the city's neighborhoods and rebuilding downtown.
But when Alex White announces his plans, we get a dismissive...
"White rattled off a populist platform at this afternoon’s press conference."
Oh well, as the old song goes, it ain't what you say it's the way that you say it.
MacAttack - Oh, I see. Rather than Bill Buckley, you prefer a modification of Ben Franklin's injunction, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." as a way to judge the Vatican’s dealings with the fascists and Nazis.
Perhaps something along the line of, "They who can give up a higher moral standard and adopt moral relativism in order to obtain a little temporary political safety, have no morals and do not deserve political safety,"?
MacAttack - to paraphrase William Buckley's famous quote, "“I won't insult your intelligence by suggesting that you're seriously asking that question".”
