Hopefully one of the first lessons learned from the UofR/East partnership is to NOT practice favoritism when hiring (err... re-hiring) school leaders with questionable character.
Flabbergasted. A couple years ago, RCSD eliminated most of their Student & Family Support Centers. These programs helped connect students and families to social/emotional supports in the school and in the community. Since their demise, those supports are much more difficult to access for RCSD students. Many of the support programs ended up going to other schools/districts. For Otuwa to trumpet the need for social-emotional supports while having a hand in eliminating those supports is absolutely bewildering.
I must agree with Don & Gotta Say It. UofR will likely be successful in this venture because they will be able to do things the district would never be able (or willing) to do. Reducing enrollment, reducing class size, hand selecting teachers and students. They got an extra $10 million from RCSD as well - for ONE school. East has failed miserably under the current principal, Anibal Soler, and guess what - he's back!! I wonder if he's a former (or current) UofR student???
"For example, the school's August graduation rate in 2012 was 29.2 percent."
Wasn't Vicky Ramos Monroe's Principal at the time? Can someone explain the logic in going back to that?? Absolutely unbelievable. Plain & simple - Vargas is incompetent and must go.
I don't know why everyone is so concerned - maybe ya'll didn't hear - football is back at Monroe High School!! smh
A large part of why I visit this site and read City Newspaper articles is to read the comments. I used to visit 13wham quite often, but once they removed the ability to comment, I stopped. The quality of discourse on the D & C website took a huge dive once they required facebook login. I believe that allowing anonymous comments lets readers share information and insight that they would not feel safe/comfortable sharing if they had to disclose their identifty. There is value in this information, and it's up to me as reader to sift through and make that determination. I frequent this site, I would visit much less frequently (if at all) if the ability to comment anonymously were taken away. Frankly, I'm more concerned about sweeping generalizations and name calling that some of your courageous (named!) readers employ...
"But it’s also true that he’s unable to keep many of the social ills that students face every day outside the walls of city schools without more help from the community."
But it's also true that RCSD has MANY agencies & programs from this community willing to help, but Vargas just eliminated their support system within the schools (Student & Family Support Centers). They were created for exactly this purpose. He keeps talking about help from the community but what he's done is make it much harder for this community to help his students. SMH
