Right on. I read the book and it was. .. difficult to stomach. I hope the film captured some of Mr Northrop's ingenuity and his pondering over the nuances of cotton-picking talent and effective sugar cane harvesting (two topics of which I can scarcely imagine), his descriptions of which were really practical; a learned man indeed that heaps of injustice nearly broke.

Also, I hope some of Mr. Northrop's sarcasm and wit (and dare I say self-awareness of his elevated mental faculties as compared to other born slaves) come through, though that might be even harder to translate into the film.
