We all know why classical music is a fail; now we know why classical dance is a fail. This is not an opinion about the expertise of the Rochester City Ballet, but to register my disappointment in the venue chosen for the recent "Bowie Ballet". It was not in the city of Rochester, as I expected, but performed in the suburb of Pittsford, at a price range inaccessible to many who could have experienced this as an introduction to classical dance.
I am a classical piano player, and am trained in classical dance. Most of my experience has been in Ballroom dance. Over the years, I have watched with disappointment as the classical arts distance themselves more and more from a mainstream audience. Paradoxically, that same audience is thinning out dramatically as we age.
For my part, to hear music that the general population considers relevant, and to do any actual dancing, I hang out at the rock clubs, where folks can get real.
