The guy hit the gas instead of the brake, sending his car smashing through the garage wall of his home in Rochester's Grove Place neighborhood, and rupturing a gas line. He tried to call Rochester Gas and Electric — you know how much fun that can be — but then the Red Shirts showed up.…

        A single-origin story

Dale and Ellen Montondo's home in Walworth, just northeast of Penfield, is a cute, cedar-sided number that sits amidst a gaggle of tall pines. The place would seem warm and inviting even without the unmistakable aroma of chocolate that hugs you as you cross the threshold.…

Shema Sushi, Erie Grill, Mex and more
            by Dayna Papaleo
"I'd been looking for a spot in the South Wedge or Park Avenue," says Shema Sushi chef Su Holmes of her decision to move her popular eatery from the location on West Main Street in Webster that it had occupied since 2007. Shema recently opened the doors to its new home on Alexander Street's Restaurant Row, in the space formerly occupied by Gusto, and Holmes was pointing out to me a couple tables full of Webster-ites who trekked into the city to enjoy her food.…

It was a two-hour rock 'n' roll slugfest Monday night as Green Day came out swinging to a
frenzied and frozen crowd at the Blue Cross arena. Some kids wrapped in
blankets had camped out overnight and looked like frostbitten refugees as they
stumbled about.…

The campus dining services at Rochester Institute of Technology will use approximately 4,000 gallons of cooking oil this year. And every time a fryer is emptied or a skillet is drained, that goop has to go somewhere.…

Local musician Jesse Sprinkle has been going on humanitarian trips to Africa since 2008. But last year he realized that his unique skill set as a musician and producer could allow him to help the millions of orphans in Uganda in a very different way. By teaching these children about music, he and his musical partner Kurt Johnson are hoping to make an impact on their lives.
            by Frank De Blase
It was in the early hours of the morning in Kivulu, a slum in the capital city of Kampala, Uganda, that Rochester musician Jesse Sprinkle had an epiphany. While working with the Ugandan Water Project, Sprinkle visited a little hut called Paradise.…

On almost any day or evening, the Flying Squirrel Community Space is home to a potpourri of progressive artists, musicians, and social justice activists. The Squirrel is a meeting space. But it’s also an organization with its own members, who often describe it as a collective: a community that’s part of other communities.

Zachary Ceru placed his toy hoop over his head and stepped out on the dance floor. The brightly-colored ring glowed in the dark as it swung from Ceru's neck with hooping's familiar twirl.…

Rochester is obviously known for its icy cold winters. But few would guess that, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Greater Rochester area is home to roughly 2000 sportsmen willing to trek out on frozen ponds, cut through the surface ice, and try to catch a fish on just about any pond or body of water

The souls of artists and philosophers are never still; their vigilant senses are buffeted by the urgently calling winds and tides of change that they often detect before others. As such, some artists serve as the most honest of social critics.…

struggles with bipolar disorder.…

Two hundred and twenty six. That’s how many times I started up “Fire Emblem: Awakening” before I beat it. Two hundred and twenty six different times, with an average play time of 10 minutes before I hit the power button and started over again. Across the 40 and a half hour adventure, that’s a lot of resetting. The game now sits at third place (only behind the Mii Plaza and the Notifications menu) among my most frequently opened 3DS titles.

It looks like Nintendo has listened.

A much more apologetic Satoru Iwata led off today's Nintendo Direct presentation, and in the first chunk of the presentation gave a lot of good news on small, but important fixes to the overall Wii U experience. The Wii U virtual console is coming (with GamePad, Miiverse support), as are two system updated that will fix the load times of the system. Game Boy Advance titles are coming to the service as well, but sadly there was no mention of GameCube games. Miiverse will also be branching out, coming to smartphones sometime in the Spring.

The four-story building at 13 South Fitzhugh Street is alive with activity as construction workers in hard hats and dusty dungarees file in and out of the front entry. Some workers haul materials up to the roof, while others caulk the ground-floor windows.…

At a time when many neighborhood organizations are tightening their belts, Robert Walker-Smith, new executive director of the Southwest Area Neighborhood Association, says his goal is to nearly triple the group's annual budget from $1.2 million to about $3.5 million over the next 18 months. Where will the extra money come from?…

It's been a long, arduous journey, but Art Walk Extension in Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts opened Friday. And if it's true that art is in the eye of the beholder, it's probably also true that the success of a major urban development project is equally subjective. The end result of Art Walk Extension frustrates some people and delights others.
