We will explore the cultural ecology and social history of the Genesee River Lower Falls gorge in Rochester, NY. Beginning with a short introduction to the 6 Nation Iroquois Confederacy, students will experience first hand a centuries old Seneca hunting and fishing encampment. From there, we will move onto the European settlement of the gorge by visiting remaining structures from the first textile mills in Rochester. Students will learn about early industrial and residential settlements such as Carthage, McCkrakenville, and Rochesterville.
