ART | "Intimations"

What better way to wrap up a long, humid summer, than with an exhibit of artwork that focuses on New York State vistas at their glorious peak? Usher in the fall by visiting Oxford Gallery (267 Oxford Street) to see "Intimations," featuring paintings in oil by Poughkeepsie-based artist Carolyn Edlund and Buffalo-based artist Fran Noonan.

Edlund's luminous works are peaceful stills of the Hudson River region where she makes her home, and she draws some influence from the painting tradition that took its name from the river. She renders crisp, autumnal riverbanks in late evening light, sleepy equines lingering near a barn under bright moonlight, and vibrant colors reflected on the snow-white petals of a cluster of peonies. Noonan's tonalist paintings are characterized by a dramatic play of light on backlit trees and against falling water. Fine details and an unexpected spectrum of hues emerge from his broad washes of pigment.

The show runs Saturday, September 3, through Saturday, October 15, with an artists' reception scheduled for Saturday, September 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and the space will be closed September 15-17. For more information, call 271-5885 or visit oxfordgallery.com.
