ART | "Project Baldwin"

James Baldwin was a brilliant writer and civil rights activist with a crushing knack for articulating hard truths and tensions regarding race, sexuality, and class. This month, MuCCC (142 Atlantic Avenue) will host "Project Baldwin, A Live Theatre Experience featuring the Works of James Baldwin," presented by David Shakes and the North Star Players.

The program will include excerpts from Baldwin's diverse body of work, including "Blues for Mister Charlie," a tragic play loosely based on the brutal murder of Emmett Till; "My Dungeon Shook — Letter to My Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of Emancipation," an essay that discusses the central role of race in American history; "Evidence of Things Not Seen," a nonfiction book about the Wayne Williams Atlanta child murders; and "The Amen Corner," a play that addresses the role of a church in an African-American family and the effect of a poverty born of racial prejudice on an African-American community.

"Project Baldwin" will be performed Tuesday, January 20, through Saturday, January 24, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, January 25, at 1 p.m. A community scholar guest speaker will lead a discussion on Baldwin's work following each performance.

General admission is $5 on Tuesday and Wednesday, and $15 on Thursday through Saturday ($12 for seniors, and $10 for students). The Sunday performance includes a discussion and reflection with the cast, and admission is pay-what-you-wish, with a suggested donation of $5 per family. Tickets are available through at muccc.org/events or at the MUCCC box office 40 minutes before curtain. For more information, visit muccc.org.
