CLASSICAL | Amenda and Friends: A Transfigured Night

First Muse Chamber Music will open its 2014-15 season, Sunday, with performances by the Amenda Quartet, Michael Kannen with David Brickman, and Maria Lambros. The Amenda Quartet — violinists David Brickman and Patricia Sunwoo, violist Melissa Matson, and cellist Mimi Hwang — will begin the night with a performance of the last of Beethoven's "early" quartets the B-flat major Quartet, Op. 18 No. 6. Amenda is steadily working its way through "Project Ludwig," a Beethoven cycle. Following, cellist Michael Kannen will be joined by Brickman for Zoltan Kodaly's "Duo for Violin and Cello" — an exciting, folky piece that calls to mind eastern European culture and traditions, and really puts to test the violin-cello format. The headline for the night will be a performance of "Verklaerte Nacht" featuring violist Maria Lambros. The string sextet was written in 1899 by Arnold Schoenberg, inspired on a poem by Richard Dehmel and Schoenberg's own feelings about his future wife, Mathilde von Zemlinsky. The work exudes late-night romance: passionate swells; long, slow, harmonious moments; and a sense of pining.

The Amenda Quartet with guests will perform Sunday, September 28, at First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road. 7:30 p.m. $5-$20.
