CLASSICAL | SCMR plays Mozart

The next concert by the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester is titled "Mozart and a Guggenheim Fellow." Mozart is, well, Mozart, and the Guggenheim Fellow is contemporary composer Adam Roberts; both are represented by quartets for oboe and strings. Roberts's music has been widely performed and praised, and he was indeed named a Guggenheim Fellow in 2016 — just after SCMR board member and composer James Willey offered Roberts the commission for this work. Along with the Roberts world premiere and the familiar Mozart work (both with SCMR co-director Erik Behr as oboe soloist), the concert offers Zoltán Kodály's Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, and Paul Schoenfeld's "Café Music," a spicy mash-up of musical styles from light classical to gypsy and Broadway.

Society for Chamber Music will perform Sunday, April 23, at Hochstein Performance Hall, 50 North Plymouth Avenue. 4 p.m. $35; students free with school ID. 413-1574; chambermusicrochester.org.
