Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and his wife spent summers at their lakeside villa at Troldhaugen, where Grieg had a separate composer's hut. He and his wife devised a system whereby she would hang out a colored cloth, visible to him at the hut, whenever visitors stopped by the villa, so that he could maintain the level of solitude he required to compose. Join the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester to experience the beauty of Scandinavia, including a performance of Grieg's "Sonata in A Major for Cello and Piano, Op. 36." The musicians performing in this concert include Ramon Ricker, clarinet; Wilfredo Deglans and Shannon Nance, violins; George Taylor, viola; Stefan Reuss, cello; and Joseph Werner, piano.
The "Scandinavian Sampler" takes place Sunday, March 17, 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Ave. $30. 377-6770, ChamberMusicRochester.org.
