Recreation: If you would rather hike at Genesee Valley Park, there will be two scheduled hikes there this weekend. At 9 a.m. Saturday, there will be a moderate/hilly five-mile hike through Durand-Eastman Park West (Lakeshore Blvd.). Hikers will meet at the Golf Course Parking Lot on Kings Highway. Music: It shouldn’t take more than two redundant adjectives to entice you to check out Big Gigantic, an instrumental livetronica, jazz and hip-hop group out of Colorado, when it performs at Water Street Music Hall (204 N. Music: Folk singer Laura Cortese, a solo artist and frequent side musician for artists like Band of Horses and Uncle Earl, returns to Rochester for a show in Lovin’ Cup (300 Park Point Dr.) at 8 p.m. Sunday, with Dietrich Strause opening. Music: Joining forces in a single concert event are the University of Rochester Brass Choir and the Rochester Scottish Pipes and Drums. The big sounds of the concert will include fanfares, marches, hymns, and traditional pipe band selections like “Scotland the Brave” and “Amazing Grace.” The UofR Brass Choir is led by founder and director Josef Hanson, and is a 32-member ensemble. Since 1919, the Rochester Scottish Pipes & Drums has been dedicated to the presentation and preservation of traditional Scottish pipe music. The true Scottish plaid of the uniform of the corps is taken from the 42nd Highland Division, the Black Watch of the British Army, by special permission of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Music: If you’re like me and you’ve had it up to your ears with grey skies, get up off your sofa and turn your cabin fever into foot-stomping, body-moving percussion fever. This weekend composer and percussion guru Ivan Trevino leads Rebecca Gilbert, flute, Melissa Matson, viola, and Kathleen Murphy Kemp, cello, in a concert that includes the world premiere of his “Chamber Riffs.” It’s classical crossover, but not without its roots. The program also includes an adaptation of J.S. Bach’s “Gamba Sonata in G Major.” And, if I still haven’t grabbed you, how about “Taming the Ox” by composer Stephen Rush, who will be part of the performance. Rush, who earned his doctorate at Eastman School of Music, has credits on over 30 CDs, ranging from electronic experimental to jazz. “Re:Percussion” takes place Sunday, February 17, 7:30 p.m. at First Unitarian Church, 220 Winton Road South.$5-$10 ($20 family). 271-9070, FirstMuse.org.
