Daily Choices: What to do on Thursday, December 20

MUSIC: What Mannheim Steamroller lacks in the harder Christmas rock provided by groups like Trans-Siberian Orchestra, it more than make up for in 80’s-style keyboards and wardrobe — which certainly has its own appeal and amusement value. Mannheim Steamroller is coming to town for its yearly flattening of Rochester, and as usual is bringing a potent mix of light show, electronics, and Christmas-themed entertainment. Tunes range from Casio-driven, almost New Wave to New Age noodlings, but are most assuredly going to bring you all those holiday jams with orchestral accompaniment. This would definitely be one of those safe places to hang with the parents during the Christmas vacation season, but might not be the best choice if you have younger children, teens, or relatives that don’t “get” electronic music. Mannheim Steamroller performs tonight 7:30 p.m. at the Auditorium Theater, 885 E. Main St. $35-$75. 222-5000, rbtl.org.

FILM: Watch Bill Murray star in a modern day twist of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” in “Scrooged.” 8 p.m. at the Dryden Theatre (900 East Ave.). $6-$8. 271-3361. Dryden.eastmanhouse.org.

MUSIC: Even if you don’t buy into all the Mayan hype, tonight starts a long line of local end of the world parties. If you want to party like the world is going to end (even if it isn’t) tonight at Sticky Lips (830 Jefferson Rd., stickylipsbbq.com) you’ll be treated to the Americana sounds of Clinton's Ditch and the Ruckus Juice Jug Stompers. Doors open at 8 p.m., tickets run $8-$10.

ART: View a variety of photographers’ works at Image City Photography Gallery’s Holiday Show 2012. Guest photographers include Peter Bilous, Bruce Bozman, Dewey Fladd, Dan Nolan, Scott, Matyjaszek, and others, along with artists-in-residence David Perlman and Jim Patton. 11 a.m.-7 p.m. 722 University Ave. 271-2540. imagecityphotographygallery.com.

MUSIC: A collection of local singer/songwriters await you and tonight if you head on down to Tala Vera (155 State St., tala-vera.com, where you’ll be able to catch Chris Moore, Adam Pieno, and Eric Booth. Music starts at 8 p.m., cover costs $5.

MUSIC: Want to get down and boogie and dance tonight? Ring in the Christmas season and cheer at the Bug Jar (219 Monroe Ave., bugjar.com) for tonight’s Thursday Night Shakedown Christmas Party. Party is free for those of you 21 and up, but will cost $10 for unders. Music starts at 9 p.m.
