Daily Choices: What to do on Thursday, November 8 

MUSIC: Philly-based alt-hip-hop band G Love & Special Sauce will be grooving it up tonight at Water Street Music Hall (204 N. Water St., waterstreetmusic.com, $22-$25), so if you want to try its flavor yourself, check it out. Local group Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad will open up with an acoustic set, music starts at 8 p.m.

THEATER: "Motherhood: The Musical" is a comedic take on the stresses and joys of maternal life, and is being staged at Downstairs Cabaret at Winton Place (3450 Winton Place) through November 18. MUSIC: RIPROC will again be taking over Dubland (315 Alexander St., 232-7550) for weekly Thursday shows, kicking off this week is Ithaca's The Gunpoets and Mic See. Cover is a low $5 (for those of you 21 and up) and will run you $15 if under, music on both floors of Dubland gets going at 10 p.m.

ART: Check out a retrospective of the work of one of Rochester's art royals in "Nathan Lyons: Photographs 1957-2012," open today at Spectrum Gallery at Lumiere Photo (100 College Ave.), 9 a.m.-6 p.m. The exhibit continues through November 30, and admission is free. MUSIC: Are you famous? Maybe you are or maybe you aren't, but everybody knows that Ian Downey Is Famous. Want to see the fame for yourself? Head on down to the Bug Jar (219 Monroe Ave., bugjar.com) tonight to see the local group for yourself. Trife Life, Hank Wood & The Hammerheads, and Goosebumps will be opening up, cover runs $6-$8, music starts at 8 p.m.

DANCE: If you love 80's New Wave music, head over to Dance Lab East at Skylark Lounge (40 S. Union St.) and dance the night away to visual effects, beginning at 10 p.m. Admission is 99 cents. For more info, call 270-8106.

MUSIC: Anniversaries are always a good thing to celebrate, and reggae anniversaries are even better! Get your jam on tonight at Club NV (123 Liberty Pole Way) for the Reggae Thursday anniversary party, with music by the one and only Mr. Vegas. 21 and up for the dudes, ladies, you can get in 18 and up, doors open at 10 p.m. and cover is only $10 before 11 p.m. Get down and get your groove on.

LITERATURE: Join The Greater Rochester Russell Set in its monthly celebration and discussion of the works of the late, great, modern philosopher Bertrand Russell. November's event takes place tonight, 7 p.m. at Writers and Books (740 University Ave.), at which Phil Ebersole will discuss Bertrand Russell's religion and science.
