Daily Choices: What to do on Tuesday, November 13
by Willie Clark @_WillieClark and Rebecca RaffertyMUSIC: There is no shortage of dazzling slap-happy bassists on the scene today, but I have never seen one as wedded to the instrument as Victor Wooten. In every performance, he simply becomes one with the bass and there's seemingly nothing he can't do. Not since JacoPastorius has there been a bassist who coaxes such a beautiful tone from his instrument. He may be best known for his work with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones but Wooten packs more than enough power on his own. Check him out tonight at the German House (315 Gregory St., upallnightpresents.com, $25-$30) at 8 p.m. He'll also be at the House of Guitar today for a free performance/clinic at 1 p.m.
FILM: The Little Theatre (240 East Ave.) will screen "Koch" as part of its One Take: Stories through the Lens series, tonight at 7 p.m. The documentary is an intimate portrait of three-time New York City Mayor Ed Koch. Tickets are $10. For more information, call 258-0400 or visit thelittle.org.
MUSIC: L.A. by way of Green Bay, Wisconsin rock and raunch duo The Violet Lights pays so much homage to Britpop, you'd swear this band was from Blighty. There's Mancunian guitar tremolo on some tracks, and Glasgowian choruses on others giving debut EP "Sex & Sound " an across the pond vibe. Joel Nass (vocals, guitar) and Amber Garvey (keyboard, vocals) make it tasty and leave audiences wanting for more. Lead single "Your Love/Not Enough" is pure bubblegum dance-punk that's got me jumpin' like Jack Flash. With Routine Involvements & Veluxe tonight at the Bug Jar (219 Monroe Ave., $6-$8, 9 p.m.). DJ Professor follows the bands at midnight.
ART: Check out the current exhibit up at Community Darkroom Gallery (at Genesee Center for the Arts & Education, 713 Monroe Ave.) today, 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. "Kaleidoscope: Objects of Wonder, Pattern, and Space" includes work by Community Darkroom Photographers, and remains on view through March 2, 2013. MUSIC: The Air Force Band of Liberty Bay State Winds will be performing tonight at the Andrews B. Hale Auditorium on Roberts Wesleyan College campus (2301 Westside Dr., roberts.edu) at 7:30 p.m. for a free show (tickets required, though). Head to the website for more information.
LECTURE: Brush up on regional history, lore, and special locations today. Local author Christopher Carosa will speak about his book, "50 Hidden Gems of Western NY" today, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Jack's Place at the Durand Eastman Golf Course (1200 Kings Highway).
