Lecture: The William A. Kern Lecture Series kicks off today with a 2 p.m. lecture by Min-Ha Pham titled, "Personal Style Blogs and DIY Race: On Race, Aesthetics, and Capitalism." The talk takes place in the Carlson Auditorium at Rochester Institute of Technology (Lomb Memorial Drive, Henrietta), and is free to attend. For more information, call 475-2057.

Music: Defense? Drive? Whatever it is the D stands for, acoustic country rock artist Big D will be playing tonight at another big D, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (99 Court St., dinosaurbarbque.com) tonight for a free show at 9 p.m. Oh! Maybe the d is delicious?

Lecture: The Irondequoit Library (Helen McGraw Branch, 2180 E. Ridge Rd.) will host "A Tale of 13 Rochesters" tonight, 7-8:30 p.m., with Benn and Sally Forsyth, who will discuss some of the various cities and towns that share our name. Music: Roar! Dinosaur Annex, a Boston based chamber music group, will be performing tonight at Kilbourn Hall (26 Gibbs St., esm.rochester.edu), at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are sold one hour before the show at the door only. (Also free to UR ID holders.)

Workshop: You can get yourself out the door in the morning, but can you make your own bean brew? Take a Home Brewing Techniques Class at Joe Bean Coffee Roasters (1344 University Ave.) on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. through February 13. Music: Best band name of the week award goes to Boston’s Underwater Bear Ballet, performing tonight at the Bug Jar (219 Monroe Ave., bugjar.com). Music starts at 9 p.m., cover runs $6-$8, and Barry and Greyhound Bandits open up.
