Eastman Museum to update public on restoration efforts tonight

The George Eastman Museum will host a community forum at 6 p.m. today, Monday, July 11, to share information about its historic mansion restoration program and to update community members about the next phase.

The forum will be held in the Curtis Theatre at the museum, 900 East Avenue. (Use the cafe and store entrance on the west side of the building.)

In 2013, Bero Architecture conducted a site condition survey of George Eastman’s historic residence. The survey identified urgent restoration and repairs of various areas of the historic house and garden structures, with an estimated total cost of $3 million. The Eastman Museum has raised more than $1.3 million in private funding to support these restoration efforts, which will preserve the historic mansion and assure that all areas remain safe and publicly accessible.

The museum will submit a grant application to the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation on July 29. This application’s focus is  restoration of more than 40 windows in the historic mansion. These windows are original to the house and were installed between 1903 and 1905. Many years of severe weather have compromised their functionality and their ability to protect the interior and structural integrity of the house. In addition, more than 65 custom-designed, preservation-approved storm windows will be manufactured and attached to the house.
