Eugenio Cotto Jr., former executive director of the Group 14621 Community Association, will announce his candidacy for Rochester City Council this Saturday. Cotto is seeking the seat currently held by fellow Democrat Mike Patterson.

Patterson, who represents the city's northeast quadrant, was appointed to take Lovely Warren's place on Council after Warren was elected mayor last November. Patterson was serving in the Monroe County Legislature at the time. He must run this year to fill out the remaining time on Warren's term.

Since both men are Democrats, they will have to fight it out for the Democratic endorsement. The loser of that contest could then choose to run a primary election against the winner.

Cotto will make his announcement at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, at St. Michael's hall, 869 North Clinton Avenue.

Cotto is also founder and president of the nonprofit Rochester Hispanic Youth Baseball League. Cotto lives in the northeast quadrant  — a requirement to run for the district seat.
