Geva Theatre Center today announced its 2015-16 season which will feature 14 major productions and events across the non-profit theatre's 43rd year. The season's lineup will feature a mix of well-known titles, like the musical comedy "Monty Python's Spamalot"; Tony Award winners, such as "Red," the acclaimed drama about painter Mark Rothko; and an offering of challenging, contemporary plays on the Fielding Nextstage.
"The 2015-2016 season provides a dynamic array of artistic challenges and creative opportunities for our hundreds of guest artists and resident staff to once again dazzle our community with their theatre-making," said Artistic Director Mark Cuddy.
Along with the six Mainstage presentations and three Nextstage productions, Geva will also host three special productions and the Festival of New Theatre. And it will once again be a venue for the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival.
The 2015-16 Wilson Mainstage Series will consist of:
"Monty Python's Spamalot" (September 9 through October 11), a musical comedy "lovingly ripped off from the motion picture 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail.'" This production has won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
"Red" (October 20 through November 15), a winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Play, "Red" follows painter Mark Rothko as we struggles with an assignment to create works for New York's Four Seasons restaurant.
"Miracle on South Division Street" (January 12 through February 7). Written by Tom Dudzick ("Over the Tavern"), this comedy follows a Buffalo family after a deathbed confession challenges a long-held family belief.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" (February 16 through March 20). Mark Cuddy will direct this adaptation of Harper Lee's classic book.
"A Moon for the Misbegotten" (March 29 through April 24). By Eugene O'Neill, the four-time Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize-winning playwright, "A Moon for the Misbegotten" focuses on two wounded hearts who find redemption through love. This production is produced in association with the Theatre Royal in Waterford, Ireland.
"The May Queen" (May 3 through May 29) is a new office comedy about the rumors that fly when a high school class's May Queen comes back to town after nearly 20 years.
On the 2015-16 Fielding Nextstage Series will be:
"The Lion" (November 11 through November 22). Written and performed by Benjamin Scheuer, "The Lion" is a coming-of-age musical that just finished award-winning runs in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, London, and Off-broadway.
"An Iliad" (February 4 through February 21) is the familiar epic by Homer but adapted with contemporary stories set in the shadow of war in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria.
"Dancing Lessons" (April 14 through May 1) is a new romantic comedy by Mark St. Germain and produced by the Ithaca-based Kitchen Theatre Company.
Other shows and events announced include:
"Journey to the Son: A Celebration of Son House" (Late August 2015). A four-day festival that weaves music, theater, film, audio recordings, storytelling, and lectures together to celebrate blues musician Eddie "Son" House.
"A Christmas Carol" (November 25 through December 27), Mark Cuddy's adaptation of Charles Dickens' holiday classic.
"Sister's Easter Catechism: Will My Bunny Go to Heaven?" (March 1 through March 27). Maripat Donovan returns as Sister, this time teaching the class about Easter bunnies, eggs, and baskets.
Festival of New Theatre (October 2015) returns for a two-week showcase of new plays and projects.
First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival (September 17 through September 26). Geva's Nextstage will once again be a venue for the Fringe Festival.
