Jacob and Wilhelm—the Brothers Grimm—didn’t set out to collect folk tales for children. In fact, many of their 200 plus folk tales and legends were peppered with violence and cruelty, perhaps reflecting the medieval culture from whence they came. Even then, in 1812 when they were first published, there were objections that the stories were not suitable for children, and many plots were later modified.
