POLITICS: Cruz, Lightfoot petitions are valid 

The county Board of Elections has ruled that the candidate petitions submitted by Jose Cruz and John Lightfoot are valid. The petitions were challenged by Ruth Brooks-Ward, a known associate of State Assembly member David Gantt.

Cruz and Lightfoot are challenging the incumbent Gantt, setting up a three-way Democratic primary for the Assembly seat.

But Cruz and Lightfoot still face a lawsuit over their petitions. Brooks-Ward also filed the lawsuit, which is a challenge to the legitimacy of signatures on their petitions.

The Board of Elections validated 1,037 signatures out of the 1,146 that the Cruz campaign filed. And it validated 600 signatures out of the 784 that the Lightfoot campaign filed.
