PROGRESSIVE METAL | Felix Martin

Probably most of us haven't seen anything quite like this. Two hands wrap around 14 strings and ripple down two fret boards. I quickly felt a tension between closing my eyes to listen and wanting to watch the acrobatic feats of Felix Martin's 10 fingers. It's like his hands are having a lively conversation with one another as they finger-tap, strum, cascade, and riff across the frets. At times it's frantic, and other at times hypnotically rhythmic. Martin brought his ambidextrous gift up from Venezuela when the prestigious Berklee School of Music sent him a scholarship. He's out of school now and taking his progressive-metal-jazz-fusion all over North America. He and his custom made 14-string guitars signed with Prosthetic Records; and you get the feeling he's got the energy, youth, and ingenuity to add 7 more strings to his guitar.

Felix Martin plays with Barishi and BML on Thursday, February 26, at The German House, 315 Gregory Street. 7 p.m. $10-$12. felixmartin.net.
