I struggled with the genre a bit on this one. I guess it depends on your focus. If you focus on the songs, it's alt-country; the pedal steel, then it's straight up country; the three guitar frontline attack, well then, it's Southern rock all day. Founded in 1996 in Athens, Georgia, The Drive By Truckers is a prime example of road worn, rootsy rock 'n' roll. It's brash, unapologetic, and relentless in its drive. The band ain't purist, no how, but rather a sort of iconoclast traditionalist — I mean I saw them cover a Jim Carroll song. And you can, too.
Drive By Truckers performs with Tommy Brunett Band, Moho Collective, and Subsoil (playing between breaks), Thursday, July 3, at Martin Luther King Jr. Park at Manhattan Square. 5:30 p.m. $5. Cityofrochester.gov/pitp.
