Re: “A reflection of America: the president doesn't read

An aide to presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson is purported to have said something like"You have the support of every thinking person in America." To which the twice-failed candidate said: "Yes, but I need a majority."

Re: “The nation under Trump

This editorial was obviously written before Tuesday's election, a lightning bolt through the clouds. In discouraging times I think of a cartoon news anchor closing the broadcast with these words: "If you don't like the news, create some of your own." Clearly, many of our fellow citizens did just that on Election Day 2017. Our "Happy anniversary" ought to be a clarion call for us to "go and do likewise."

Re: “Now should we get rid of the Electoral College?

There is a metaphysical component to the Electoral College debate. Are we a nation of flesh and blood human beings or a collection of politically arbitrary entities called states? After all, the Preamble to the Constitution begins with the words, "We the people of the United States." The word "people" is clearly the priority here. And did not our Supreme Court decide that "one person, one vote" is the law of the land. My vote counts less than my fellow citizen in New Mexico as a proportion of the electoral vote. The way our Senators are chosen, two to each state no matter how large, would seem to be adequate protection for the less populated states. The way it works now is no less than the tyranny of the minority.

Re: “Democracy for sale

As someone wisely said: "If you can afford to buy an election, you can afford to pay higher taxes."

Re: “Divided nation

My question: whatever happened to the Common Good? Does it not say in the Preamble to the Constitution that we the people are to establish justice and promote the general welfare? American individualism has run amuck! We are social creatures. We are an interdependent web. Too many of our "leaders" have forgotten that.
