Born into a country beset by virtually non-stop war, Richard III was raised with no indication he would ever rule. England was then in the hands of the House of Lancaster, which had wrested it from Richard’s ancestor, Richard II. As the struggle between the House of Lancaster and Richard’s House of York, Richard would see first his brother and then, almost inconceivably, himself sit upon the throne of England. Along the way there were glorious triumphs, disastrous losses, love, loss and heartbreak.
