Rochester schools Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams will present her proposed budget for the district’s 2017-2018 school year on Tuesday, March 28. The introductory presentation to the school board kicks off a lengthy review process and is expected to focus on closing an $80 million budget gap. The city’s Eastside Dems will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Workers United hall, 750 East Avenue, to designate candidates for mayor, City Council, and City Court. The group consists of the Legislative District 21, 23, and 24 committees.
Mayor Lovely Warren is seeking reelection, but she faces a challenge from fellow Democrats Rachel Barnhart, a former television journalist; and former city police chief James Sheppard, who is now a county legislator. Green Party candidate Alex White has also entered the race. Sheppard won the backing of three Democratic committees in the city’s northwest, so he’s leading at the moment. The party’s mayoral candidate won’t be picked until the countywide convention later this year, and the current committee votes determine how party leaders must vote during the first round of balloting.
