URBAN ACTION

This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.)

Arm-wrestling

for health care

BRAWL – the Broads Rochester Arm Wrestling League – has been staging its competitions around Rochester for five years, entertaining onlookers and raising money for area service organizations. Up next: an arm-wrestling event to benefit Planned Parenthood, at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at Butapub, 315 Gregory Street. BRAWL is requesting a $5 donation at the door, and attendees will also be urged to buy raffle tickets during the event and participate in other fund-raising activities for Planned Parenthood. Information: 222.facebook.com/RochesterBRAWL or RochesterBRAWL@gmail.com.

Library event

features Attica

inmates' lawyer

The next Books Sandwiched In program at the Central Library downtown, at lunchtime on Tuesday, March 21, will be a review of Heather Ann Thompson's "Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising in 1971 and Its Legacy." And the review of the program is a person Thompson herself credits with for having "kept this case alive": Rochester City Court Judge Ellen Yacknin.

Yacknin was a pro se law clerk for Judges John Elfin and John Curtin and later was one of the lawyers for former Attica prisoners in a class-action suit against the state. The Books Sandwiched In program runs from 12:12 to 12:52 p.m. in the library's Kate Gleason Auditorium, and you can take your lunch.

Anti-war activists will hold a demonstration on the theme "Hands off Syria – No NATO or US Intervention," on Saturday, March 18. Participants will gather at the Liberty Pole at 1 p.m., to protest US involvement in the war in Syria, the travel ban against six nations with mostly Muslim populations, and the proposed expansion of the US military budget.
