"It has been  an  honor and a privilege to work with you over the past four years, and I will miss each of you and the RFD very much," Clifford says in an e-mail circulated this afternoon.

In the same e-mail, Clifford says she has accepted the position of executive director with Community Health Services, "a local company that focuses on injury prevention and other public health issues."

Clifford has been a controversial figure at times, with some people accusing her of benefiting from Democratic cronyism. She ran Bob Duffy's first campaign for mayor, and Bill Johnson's unsuccessful bid for county executive. She is also the former head of the Monroe County Democratic Committee.

Clifford also took part in a last-minute campaign to keep mayor Tom Richards in office, even though, officially, the Democrats were behind Lovely Warren and it wasn't clear if Richards even wanted to stay in the race. Clifford even considered a mayoral bid herself a couple of years ago.

Clifford's superior, Fire Chief Sal Mitrano, submitted his own resignation last week. Mitrano said he was informed by incoming mayor Warren that he would not be kept on.
