The Finger Lakes region must submit its application for the Upstate Revitalization Initiative, a state competition for economic development money, by the end of the day today (October 5).

Seven Upstate regions are competing for three $500 million awards. The Buffalo-Niagara region can’t participate, since the state already has an investment program for that area: the Buffalo Billion.

The council approved the final wording of the application late last month, though the document won’t be publicly available until later today.

The application lays out how the region would invest the $500-million award. It’d direct $50 million toward the region’s photonics, optics, and imaging cluster; $75 million to the agriculture and food processing industries; $125 million to next-generation manufacturing and technology; $100 million to workforce development and Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative programs; $75 million toward entrepreneurship and development initiatives; and $75 million to support higher education and research.

The contest winner will likely be announced in December. BY JEREMY MOULE

Proof of residency is required. Information: 340-8710.
