Finger Lakes council meets on Friday

The Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council will hold its first meeting of 2016 at 10 a.m. on Friday.

The council hasn't released an official agenda yet, but it's a safe bet that a chunk of the meeting will be devoted to the $500 million Upstate Revitalization award that the Finger Lakes region won last month. The regional council received the award as part of a statewide competition, and the funding is intended to give the region's economic development efforts a hard kick forward.

In coming months, the council will have to figure out how to portion out those resources; it'll get $100 million in state assistance each year for five years. Officials have said that they plan to use a competitive application approach to solicit and evaluate project ideas.

The regional council's application for the URI funding did lay out some potential projects in the areas of optics, photonics, and imaging; agriculture and food production; and next-generation manufacturing and technology. The council also plans to use money for efforts related to the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative at United Way, particularly for entrepreneurship and workforce training programs.

The meeting will be held at the Wegmans Conference Center in Gates.
