Located in the Rochester Club Centre, Victoire bills itself as a Belgian beer bar, and everything — from the warm wood interior to the lower-level patio seating to the soccer on TV to the food offerings — supports that claim. Sure, you can get a salad or a burger, or you could opt for dishes like Flemish onion soup, a variety of steamed mussels, housemade Belgian sausage, a braised short rib sandwich, or duck-fat fries, as well as the hearty beef-and-beer stew known as carbonnade. There’s a globally sourced list of bottled beers along with an ever-changing selection of beers on tap, with many available as part of a flight. Even the bananas in Victoire’s banana split are beer-battered.

Perhaps one of the more inspired repurposings of a local structure, TRATA (also known as --- and an acronym for --- The Restaurant At The Armory) incorporates earthy woods and exposed brick into its surprisingly elegant multi-level layout overlooking Cobbs Hill Park. The changing menu boasts a global influence that’s evident in both the soups, salads, and smaller plates as well as the more substantial entrées. The fried chicken is very popular, and the juicy burgers can be built in a variety of ways. Big beer selection, including a few refreshing beer cocktails.
Decisions, decisions: You could opt for a patio table with a stellar view of the downtown Rochester skyline, or you could belly up to the chef’s counter for a front-row seat to the homey Italian cooking found at the wildly popular Tony D’s Coal Fired Pizza. Besides Tony D’s customizable pies, that 1000-degree pizza oven is responsible for roasted wings, baby-back ribs, and the massive Meatballs Al Forno. There are also panini, meal-sized salads, Italian classics like greens and beans, as well as a rotating roster of daily specials.

With its picture windows and welcoming bar, the first floor of Tapas 177 seems like a nice place for a quiet drink. But descend the stairs and Tapas 177 gets a lot sexier, bringing to mind a secret supper club with a secluded patio right in the middle of downtown Rochester. And while the menu features several entrées, the majority of the changeable offerings are smaller, fusion-y plates, such as dumplings, salads, and empanadas, perfect for fueling up before or during Tapas 177’s mega-popular Thursday night salsa dancing.
With thirty different draft lines available, plus dozens and dozens (and dozens) of different bottles from all over the world, Tap & Mallet is a beer lover’s paradise. But if you still have room for food, the Tap’s ever-changing contemporary pub menu offers dishes that mirror the global diversity of the brews, like poutine, nachos, curries, fish and chips along with the Tap’s famous CLT, a vegan sandwich made with crispy smoked coconut, tomato, lettuce and hummus on sourdough.

Drawing both its culinary and hospitality inspirations from the American South, The Revelry serves its version of Lowcountry comfort cuisine, but with an upscale twist. The menu evolves with the seasons, but you might encounter beet deviled eggs, pork belly sliders, fried green tomatoes, pimiento cheese spread, and steak frites, as well as chicken-n-waffles at Sunday brunch. The clever craft cocktails are made from small-batch spirits and fresh mixers, and the massive wine list is global in scope.
A Rochester institution since 1976, Mr. Dominic’s at the Lake has a devoted following that makes the trek towards Charlotte for Italian-American favorites in a lively place that looks like something out of a Scorsese flick. You know the drill: clams, calamari, antipasto, pastas of different shapes with different toppings, plus such favorites as chicken cacciatore, veal saltimbocca, shrimp scampi, and haddock French on Fridays. Mr. Dominic’s also offers seldom-seen menu items like frogs’ legs and braciole. Lunch is a scaled-back version of dinner, with the inclusion of burgers and other sandwiches.

Jines is a great place to go when you and your dining companion(s) can’t reach a consensus on what to eat. Upscale diner might be the most fitting description of Jines, its website promising that “Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available all day long, seven days a week.” The menu is huge, offering exactly what you’d expect: a roster of egg preparations, pancakes, salads, sandwiches, and comfort-food entrées, plus a few Italian and Greek favorites. Beer and wine are available, and Jines’ outdoor seating at the corner of Park and Berkeley is prime for people-watching.
Built in 1916 and named for the fire company that resided there until 1962, the meticulously restored Hose 22 Firehouse Grill is an American-style grill with --- you got it --- a firehouse concept. The menu is broken into five sections, 1st Alarm through 5th Alarm, and includes appetizers, salads, pizzas, sandwiches, and entrees, with the fire station theme reflected in menu items like the Back Draft Chicken Sandwich, Rescue Reuben, or Hose 22’s signature item, the Engine House Ribs.
