Re: “Frederick Douglass statue damaged; police arrest two

These two kids made a bad mistake. The idea that they should have their lives torn asunder by a bad night and cast out forever, however, is too much about punishment and does not take into account rehabilitation of individuals, particularly young drunken foolish individuals.
This reaction by some to destroy these two dumb kids' lives for trashing a statue is more the politics of revenge than it is a carefully understood consequence. Anger is appropriate; revenge is for the weak. Rehab and extensive community service is a better option than kicking them out. And the social consequences of what they did will be humbling to them also.

Re: “Frederick Douglass statue damaged; police arrest two

The theory is that college is where people can further their development, which is not a money-back guarantee by any college. The notion that colleges should ban racists from entering is idiotic and ham-fisted, at best. College is as good a place as any to get enlightened. But no one guarantees it.
A crime is a crime and racism in and of itself, while it may be shallow and terrible, is not a crime. Destruction of property and harassing people or defacing a headstone are crimes.
Not every racial crime deserves a headline, however. And there are always going to be racists.

Re: “Frederick Douglass statue damaged; police arrest two

Thank you for your response, Mary Anna. I am aware of citing sources. And sources should be diverse.
I think that this impression of the new partnership between City and WXXI will return again. It's a new consideration for City, of course, of which you are aware. I mentioned it because optics are sometimes 90% of a given scenario. And once an impression is formed, it's sometimes hard to shake.
I do hope the merger goes well for City and WXXI. And I'd love to see a certain highly paid executive at WXXI take a pay cut for the sake of fairness and survival.

Re: “Frederick Douglass statue damaged; police arrest two

I'm wondering why it says in the article "Boedicker told WXXI that.. "
Is City going to say this now that they were bought by WXXI?
Is it deference to WXXI or is it submission?
... Or just a plug maybe.

Re: “VOTE NOW: Best of Rochester 2018 Primary Ballot

It is totally shitty that you never include bookstores but so many crappy salon categories, dopey frivolous stuff, etc.

Local bookstores:

1) Greenwood books
2) North Star books
3) Before Your Quiet Eyes
4) Small World books
5) Rick's Recycled books
6) Yesterday's Muse books - Webster
7) Mood Makers
8) Comics Etc.
9) Bartertown collectibles
10) Abacus bookstore - Pittsford
11) Books Etc. - Macedon

And many others locally.

No idea why you ignore bookstores in the Best of Roc thing every year. But it sucks. And you could really lend them and the community a hand by including them.

Re: “Ask a punk

Most rock music has always been fundamentally about rebellion. It seems like lamenting that punk music is dead is the same as lamenting that New Wave is dead or that disco is dead or that the Ramones are gone. Music and people keep evolving. Punk music came and went like a lot of other things. Its legacy is safe.

There's a lot of great rock and roll music still. As far as people in punk clothes, rock and roll and art don't require a uniform or leather or denim or gelled spikey hair. And it always seems like punks then & now often don't like being around anyone who isn't dressed like them. That just seems a little bit shallow and too exclusive. That kind of belongs mostly to a high school setting, to group according to threads and styles, to not want to be seen talking to someone "uncool".

Punk isn't dead. Nor is New Wave. Listen to it when you want to. Recordings are still there at Bop Shop, Needledrop, Hi-Fi Lounge, the Archive, HOG. No uniform required. And there's no shortage of good music in Rochester and beyond.
