  • Film preview: 'Burning'

Based on Haruki Murakami's short story "Barn Burning," South Korean director Lee Chang-dong's "Burning" is an indelible, slow-burn thriller that begins as a quiet character study, detours into an enigmatic tale of romance and jealousy, then finally emerges as a chilling and unsettlingly elusive mystery.

A riveting portrait of world-class Russian rhythmic gymnast Margarita Mamun, "Over the Limit" offers an at times harrowing dive into exactly what it takes to be an Olympic champion.

Felicity Jones portrays Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a brilliant woman who stuck to her principles, but who could be shrewd when necessary. It's tough going, but nonetheless Ginsburg persists.

Re: “Recap: CITY's top movies of 2017

Hi John! "Three Billboards" is a film that I like quite a bit, but my issues with some of McDonagh's writing/storytelling decisions (which I touched on in my review: https://www.rochestercitynewspaper.com/roc…) have dimmed my opinion on each successive viewing. Though I'd absolutely say that McDormand, Rockwell, and Harrelson's performances all rank amongst the best of the year. Consider it an unofficial honorable mention.

Thanks for pointing that out R Shea, he's one I missed. The film is chock full o' Western NY natives. Composer David Shire's from Buffalo too!

Re: “Film Review: "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"

Hi Kathryn! Thanks for the comment! You may be right, but I'm hoping that by the time I AM in the target demographic, I'll have maintained my sense of humor about it. The movie does, that's for sure. You can definitely expect to find a more than a few jokes in the same vein throughout the film, so be prepared for that once you do see it.
