Album review: 'Visions & Friends'

Bob Holz

"Visions & Friends"

MVD Audio

bobholzband.com

A drummer that doesn't stand out is a good drummer. Sure, we dig the chops, the chaos, and the backbeat, but a drummer that hangs back in the pocket is hard to find. Maybe it's the fact that we give them sticks and put drums in front of them, and they just can't help themselves. Drummer Bob Holz is in that rare breed that drives from the back seat.

Holz allows the excellent musicians on "Visions & Friends" (Ralphe Armstrong, Chet Catallo, and the late Larry Coryell) to shine in the dark and explore within an easy-going, sunshine groove. Check out what I mean when Holz and A Vison Forward play The House of Guitars on Saturday, April 22, at 3 p.m., as part of Record Store Day. They'll play again later the same day at Sticky Lips Juke Joint, 830 Jefferson Road, 9 p.m. (That show is $20-$23).
