Jason Isbell's latest, "The Nashville Sound," transcends the alt-country subgenre. I'm not much of a country guy, but this was my go-to album during a difficult period in my life: Isbell's voice lent comfort to my heart, and the music itself felt so honest. My favorite songs had the most energy, but it was the quieter tunes, like "Last of My Kind," that put me in a less vulnerable place. Lyrically, "The Nashville Sound" is a stellar album. Isbell just draws back the curtain and lets the stories be told and that's what makes him a great American songwriter. Brandi Carlile is also on this CMAC show.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit performs Friday, July 20, at CMAC, 3355 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua. 7 p.m. $26-$66. cmacevents.com; jasonisbell.com.
