ANTIQUE POP: Victor & Penny

Victor & Penny — Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane, respectively — both hail from Kansas City, but for the past 16 years the former lived in Chicago, where he performed regularly with Blue Man Group, Mar Caribe, and other respected acts. McGrane has been active in the KC arts and music scene for years, where she has worked as a musician and songwriter, as well as a film, theater, and commercial actress. Freling (who considers himself a "hopeless guitar geek") and McGrane now combine his clean, electric-hollow-body jazz solos and her single ukulele rhythm section with old-time harmonies and an overall delightful energy, into what the duo calls Antique Pop. This unique and paradoxically pegged genre puts a fresh new spin on music from the early 20th century, reorders more modern arrangements, and generates quirky, humorous, and wholesome original tunes.

Victor & Penny perform Thursday, October 25 at Abilene Bar & Lounge. 153 Liberty Pole Way. 8 p.m. $6-$8. 232-3230.
