“APP” follows a young psychology student named Anna (Hoekstra) and her friend Sophie (Cabolet) as their private secrets are revealed by a frighteningly sentient and insidious smartphone application named Iris. At first Iris is a wonderfully efficient and useful personal organizing tool, synchronizing schedules, anticipating questions, and helpfully organizing information. But soon the app’s data mining turns sinister, as Iris begins to terrorize Anna and her friends by distributing compromising photographs, videos and text messages as it delves deeper and deeper into their personal lives. The series of humiliating and frightening events grows violent as Anna and her coterie attempt to delete Iris, driving Anna to extreme measures in an attempt to protect herself and her friends from the app’s wrath.
