ART | 'These Are Sobering Findings'

If you've ever placed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request and (eventually) received the documents, you may have been surprised or disappointed by the black bars that obscure parts of the document's contents. That's because there are transparency exemptions that protect against certain harms, including invasion of personal privacy, law enforcement investigations, and geological information on wells. Such is the case with the documents presented in Lumiere Photo's new exhibition, "These Are Sobering Findings: A Collection of Redacted FBI Documents as Found & Curated by [REDACTED]," which contains images of documents that have been declassified for pubic release and public use. They include information about and images of the FBI retirement ceremony, documents on Uri Geller's August 1973 psychic tests, and "some random weird things that just look amazing," says curator Rheytchul Kimmel. One of the documents is so redacted, she says, "that all that is readable is 'no snack car.'" The show materials have been provided by a person who wishes to remain anonymous.

"These Are Sobering Findings" is on view at Lumiere Photo, 100 College Avenue (entrance in rear of building) from Friday, September 7, through Sunday, September 30. An opening reception for will be held on Friday, September 7, 6 to 9 p.m., featuring poetry readings by Andrew Conley and Harlow Crandall. Free. Lumiere's hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 461-4447,
