Re: “Unsafe at any speed?

Excellent article on a very serious topic. Living less than 1/4 mi from the CSX tracks, I shudder each day when I hear the oil trains go through. These trains are heavy laden and have quite a different sound. It's not grandpa's clicky clack anymore!

When I drive into the city each Sunday and go under the railroad overpass on the Inner Loop near Plymouth, I sigh a big relief there is no train above me! The bridges look to be in terrible condition and it certainly causes one to wonder - how much longer will they hold up?

Crude oil trains from the Bakken are a serious danger to every community along the transport route. For what benefit??? Oh right, corporate profit...

Re: “Erie County passes anti-fracking law

You have captured the frustration in our Monroe County perfectly! I'd like to remind folks that when you hear the terminology to "ban fracking" we are not just talking about a drilling technique. The issues of toxic waste and toxic water is a grave issue! Ever wonder why PA wants to ship this stuff out of state?? No one talks about the great economic gain of having toxic injection wells on their land. No one wants frack waste water sprayed on their road.

Monroe County, like Erie, has a major water source connecting to our Great Lake Ontario. The Genesee River starts in PA........that alone should be cause for concern! We need our own county legislature to address the toxic industry around drilling for shale gas.

Re: “Secondhand dealer legislation advances in the Monroe County Legislature

Several years ago NY State legislative houses tried almost the same law proposal and it failed. Why? It was an impossible law that was
1) not enforceable by police agencies
2) a burden to police agencies - in this case it would be the Sheriff's department
3) poorly defined the people to be covered under the law
4) poorly defined the merchandise to be covered under the law
5) created undue financial burden on small business owners - in the current proposal that's $250 per year
6) created impossible reporting requirements that would in effect make criminals out of the business owners who must report

Nothing has been resolved in the Monroe County proposal to fix any of these problems. It will not solve crime nor help in the recovery of stolen goods. It will cause businesses to close thereby affecting a net loss to retail sales tax coming into the county.

Anyone who sells "some old jewelry" will be affected by this proposal. It is imperative to speak to your county representative about the failings of the proposed law. And plan to attend the hearing on April 9 @ 6.
