The Rebirth Brass Band originates from New Orleans' Tremé neighborhood, founded in 1983 by Kermit Ruffins alongside brothers Keith and Phil Frazier. The modern second line brass ensemble has been dubbed "a New Orleans institution," and for good reason: the band combines traditional a New Orleans jazz sound with hip-hop, funk and soul. The band's longtime residency at the Maple Leaf Bar in Uptown New Orleans has become a musical backbone to the city's jazz scene. Rebirth Brass Band in 2011 hit No. 1 on the CMJ jazz charts as well as won a Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album in 2012.
Rebirth Brass Band will play Thursday, June 8, at Funk 'N Waffles, 204 North Water Street. 8 p.m. $20-$25. rochester.funknwaffles.com; rebirthbrassband.com.
